with the musical aspects of
filming, remarking simply,
“Music is often the better movie.”
Crowe also used a musical
reference(to explain the
question, why remake “Abre los
Ojos”? He compared the
experience to “getting my band
together and covering a song.”
Cruise himself was amazed with
the result of remaking the
Spanish film, commenting: “I
love Cameron’s approach to it.
He designed the picture to have a
dialogue between the two films.
I’ve never seen that before.”
Even Alejandro Amenabar,
writer/director of “Abre los
Ojos,” was impressed. After his
first viewing of “Vanilla Sky,” he
said to Crowe, “I feel like we are
two brothers asking the same
questions, but we have different
answers.” While there will be
much debate whether “Vanilla
Sky” lives up to its predecessor,
Crowe and Cruise simply want to
bring a great story of modem
society to an American public
overrun with pop iconography.
And who better to explore that
realm than Crowe, whose films
are immersed in it, and Cruise,
who is a pop culture icon himself?

job here with a cornucopia of talent.
The cast of Stiller, Paltrow, Wilson,
Wilson, Murray and even Glover
makes it a privilege to watch one
family’s dysfunction. Everyone
does a superb job with their
character and should be applauded.
Hackmann is stunning.
There’s no reason why he
shouldn’t be nominated for an
Academy Award. He hasn’t been
this funny in a long time in a
role, and it may serve as a
refresher for his career, which is
starting to slow down.
The script, co-authored with
Owen Wilson, is commendable
for its inventive narration. Each
portion of the film is divided into
a chapter, and it is almost as if
you are reading about the
Tenenbaums instead of watching
them. It would be no surprise if
the screenplay is nominated for
an Academy Award as well.
But beware, this isn’t a roll
over-and-laugh comedy; it’s dark.
Don’t expect slapstick; instead,
come with an open mind and
watch for the subtle, intriguing
personalities of the characters,
which ah in all is what makes this
movie such a pleasure to watch.

Lennon’s, only to cement the
song’s mystical lyrics. The rest
of the Crowes display
noteworthy musicianship,
including a Sgt. Pepper’s-era
organ and bells that seem to take
the listener back to the 1967 epic.
Relatively new to the music
scene is 20-year-old Howie Day
adding his artistic touch to
“Help!”, an early Beatles staple.
The Beatles’ early sound was
characterized by the
harmonization of McCartney and
Lennon and a youthful alacrity
replete with simple song
structures. But where other
artists on this album tried to
recreate the Beatles’ original
sound on each song, Day chooses
to vacate the cover safety zone
and delve into his own version.
His interpretation is a much
slower and sentimental
digression, ditching George
Harrison’s driving electric guitar
sound for a singer/songwriter
approach. He strums an acoustic
guitar while samples and
synthesized sounds enhance the
background music.
Grandaddy also decides to
stray from the Beatles’ sound,
but does so with less success
than Day. Covering
“Revolution” with a power-pop
feel, Grandaddy’s careless
attitude undermines the song’s
original motivation. This
attempt, though noble, fails to
capture the sense of a calm
revolution and is incompatible
with the song’s lyrics.
The soundtrack was a
worthy endeavor by Andy
Gershon and V2 Records. With
its careful selection of critic
favorites, established underdogs
and notable newcomers, the
album is an honorable ode to
rock’s most successful icons.
Often imitated, the Beatles are
respectfully paid homage by
these artists.
