game from Gortman, who added
17 points and a season-high seven
assists for Carolina.
Arkansas stayed with the Lady
Gamecocks in a back-and-forth
first half. The lead changed 11
times, mostly because of the hot
shooting of Arkansas guard India
Lewis. Lewis converted four of six
3-point shots in the first half and
scored 17 points on the day. Dana
Cherry scored 11 of her team-high
19 points in the second half to pace
Arkansas.
Able to convert its many open
looks in the first half, Arkansas
shot 50 percent from behind the
three-point arc and 38 percent
overall. In the second half,
though, the open looks disap
peared as a stringent USC de
fense put on the clamps and al
lowed its efficient offense to
shine.
“We had a much more inspired
second half defensively,” Walvius
said. “The first half today was the
worst we’ve played in a long time.
It was good to see us come back,
regroup at halftime and outscore
Arkansas by 23 points in the sec
ond half.”
Carolina shot a season-high 56
percent overall on the day (34-for
61) and an even sharper 67 percent
from behind the 3-point line (6-for
9). An indication of just how sharp
the Lady Gamecocks’ offense was
is found deep in the box score —
29 assists on 34 field goals.
USC center Petra Ujhelyi
grabbed a season-high 13 rebounds
to help Carolina get a 42-35 advan
tage on the boards. Offensively,
the Lady Gamecocks’ fast-break
ing style of play led to a 44-20 mar
gin in points in the paint.
Penn converted two free throws
at the 3:08 mark in the second half
to become just the 24th Lady
Gamecock to join the 1,000 career
point club. Gortman also reached
that milestone earlier this season.

SPORTS
BRIEFS
Softball team faces
tough schedule
The USC softball team will
face another tough schedule this
year as it sets out to defend its
SEC crown. USC’s schedule will
include 10 teams that made last
year’s NCAA Tournament.
In addition, the Lady
Gamecocks will face their
always-competitive SEC foes,
including Alabama, Florida and
LSU.
“Our schedule has a different
look this year,” Compton said.
“We are not going to Arizona, but
we go to a tournament in Plant
City, Fla., which will be a solid
tournament. This year, we are
going to host our own
tournament for the first time in
quite a while. A few teams that
we play in all of those early
tournaments were NCAA
Tournament teams from the last
two years, and some were
Women’s College World Series
teams from a couple of years ago.
It will be good for us in the fact
that we will play some regional
caliber teams in a tournament
setting.”
The Lady Gamecocks will
open their 2002 season at the
Florida State Tournament. Their
home opener will be against
Georgia Southern on Feb. 13.
Head coach Susan Walvius has led the Lady Gamecocks to
a No. 9 ranking and a 16-1 record, special to the gamecock
