BRIEFS
USC draws more
blood than Clemson
USC won this year’s
Carolina-Clemson blood
drive, with 2,397 pints
donated. Clemson’s total was
1,781 pints. This year marked
USC’s fifth win in the
competition’s 17-year
history.
A trophy was presented to
the USC Fraternity and
Sorority councils during
halftime at Saturday’s
football game. The councils
cosponsored the blood drive
with the American Red
Cross.
Both universities worked all
year to promote the event and
make it a success. This year
marked the most donations in
the event’s history.
The blood drive, which
ended Friday, is an intense
rivalry that takes place
every year during the week
of the USC-Clemson football
game.
USC ends mixed
paper recycling
The USC Office of Waste
Management and Recycling
will no longer collect mixed
paper for recycling.
The mixed-paper collection
will be replaced with a paper
collection, which will include
only white and colored '
nonglossy paper. Newsprint,
magazines, books, craft paper,
smooth cardboard and junk
mail won’t be accepted.
The change has been made
because of the slowdown in
the economy and recycling
markets available to USC.
Sanford
Hodges called on
campaign promise

ing distance of each other, often
offer similar courses.
“That redundancy that is built in
the system means we aren’t dispro
portionately funding some places
we ought to be,” Sanford said.
Across-the-board budget cuts
by the South Carolina Budget and
Control Board in October has
caused USC and other schools to
reduce funding to most depart
ments. Education funding was cut
by $79.2 million, USC by $7.9 mil
lion and Clemson by $4.6 million.
Though Sanford was not op
posed to cuts in the education bud
get, he thought Hodges had for
gotten a campaign promise.
“If you run as the ‘education
governor’ and the next thing you
know, you’re proposing across
the-board budget cuts that include
education; the two don’t exactly
coexist,” Sanford said.
Sanford also took issue with
Hodges’ decision on across-the
board cuts.
“The role of the chief executive
is to make the tough calls,”
Sanford said. “Across-the-board
cuts is saying that everything is
the same, that there is no relative
merit to this program versus the
merit to that program.”
Today, Sanford will officially chal
lenge Gov. Hodges to disclose soft
money contributions received by the
S.C. Democratic Party. The disclo
sure was originally recommended
by the governor’s panel on campaign
finance reform seven months ago but
hasn’t been acted on.
“There is nothing wrong with
sunshine in the political process,”
Sanford said.
