USC musicians to compete
at annual Battle of the Bands
Some of USC’s most talented
musicians will be competing
Tuesday at the annual USC Bat
tle of the Bands.
This event, sponsored by Car
olina Productions, accepts en
tries from any band that has at
least one member who is a stu
dent at USC. After listening to
numerous demos, the^Concert
Commission chose five acts to
participate: Exit 101, Lustre, No
Means, One Way Stop and Bolt.
Each band will have 10 minutes
to perform. They will be judged
by Dave Britt, talent buyer for El
bow Room, Moose, morning/af
ternoon 93.5 FM DJ and Kenley
Young, lead singer of the Colum
bia band Fling.
The music will start at 8:00
p.m. on the Russell House Patio,
and there is no admission
charge.

CONCERT REVIEW
Dishwalla delivers despite age
DISHWALLA
Sundance Bar and Grill
October 19
GREG HAMBRICK
THE GAMECOCK
With strategically placed
sideburns and oddly placed
tattoos, the lead singer of
Dishwalla took the stage at the
Sundance Bar and Grill for a
short set with a strong sound.
Frontman J.R. Richards was
all rock ‘n’ roll Friday night,
from the aforementioned
sideburns to the tight shirt that
taunted some hungry, drunken
girls into jumping up and down
in front of the stage to get his
attention. There was crowd
taunting with the tongue; loud,
unrecognizable screams (i.e. Axl
Rose); jumping up and kicking
the air while avoiding
Sundance’s Christmas tree
lights; and, yes, at one point,
sexual humping of the mic
stand.
The rest of the band was way
over thirty and way on the other
side of the rock sex-o-meter.
Think that fourth member of 98
Degrees. You know the one. But
looks make a band look pretty,
not sound pretty. While Richards
took care of the charm, the band
brought the music the crowd
came for.
The set was comprised of
mostly new songs. The band set
out on this limited tour so they
could learn to play the tunes
before its new album, Opaline,
hits stores in February. Strong
contenders for your ear will
include “Home” and the title
track.
The keyboard player, Jim
Wood, concerned me at first. A
rock band has to prove the need
for anything besides some
guitars and a drum. Wood
proved his weight and more with
accompaniment that added to
the music but didn’t drown out
the talent from guitar-wielders
Rodney Browning and Scot
Alexander.
The true unsung hero of the
band is drummer George
Pendergast. The man was so
talented that I can only hope
Santa is bringing him a bigger set
to play. What was most amusing
was the way he was singing along
to the songs even though he
didn’t sing backup. I decided that,
if he could hear these songs for
the umpteenth time and still
enjoy them enough to sing along,
then the least I could do was rock
along this once.
The one-set show ended with
the song everyone knows,
“Counting Blue Cars,” and a
cover of Prince’s “Nikki,” which
the band carried with such a
rock feel that you’d think Nikki
was a trailer park queen in biker
gear.
For those guys that missed the
show and want to hear the new
stuff, and for the girls that might
want to bounce in front of the
lead singer to earn some naughty
looks, the band will be playing
Cumberlands in Charleston
tonight. Call (843) 577-6469.
