Tone of ‘fetish
ball’ item tragic
Do affairs such as the
“Fetish Ball” (The
Gamecock, Sept. 17) now
qualify as status-quo
campus life activities?
How sad. 1
Even if we care
nothing of the formation
of our youth (one of-the
supposed purposes of a
university), it is not
even in the best
interests of the
university to permit
articles of this nature.
Aside from the
impression it.leaves
about the caliber of
campus life at USC, were
this article to be
circulated to particular
interest groups, the
effects could be far
reaching. For example,
Catholics could
certainly take offense at
the stereotyping and
degradation of priests,
nuns and religion. This
is not to mention that
stereotypical
degradation of this
nature may blind you to
great role models of our
time (Catholic and
otherwise), such as Lou
Holtz, Mother Teresa (a
nun), Maximillian Kolbe
(a priest) and John Paul
II (another priest), to
name a few of the
(Catholic) giants.
Nonetheless, the tone
of the article—that the
named activities are “a
fun time for all” — is
tragic. Among some of
those —such as
“extreme body piercing,”
“multiple sex partners,”
and “pushing one’s body
to the limit in the name
of extreme physical
sensation” —are
activities that are risky
at best, morality aside.

trying to get the Holy Land
back from the Muslims. At least
that has something to do with
religion.
For the U.S., this war is
retaliation, a fight for freedom
against terrorism, a fight for
those thousands of Americans
killed in the terrorist attacks.
For our enemies however,
this is jihad, plain and simple.
The Taliban says the U.S.
bombings are a terrorist attack.
I say, how does it feel?
The Taliban has requested
the bombings stop. I say, hand
over bin Laden and then we’ll
talk.
The Taliban says we won’t
succeed in our mission. I say,
just wait and see.
So, rest assured, Mr. bin
Laden; we will finish what you
started. And we will arise
victorious. Not because of God,
but because we are right in our
cause. And good always wins
over evil.
