SEC
BRIEFS
COMPILED BY MATT RAVEN
Georgia moves to
No. 19 in upset
In the biggest upset this side
of the Mississippi, Georgia (3
1,2-1) beat Tennessee (3-1,2-1)
26-24 on Saturday. This
marks the first time Georgia
has won in Knoxville since
1980. The Georgia-Tennessee
rivalry extends back to 1899,
with Tennessee now leading
the all-time series 17-12-2.
Since the current SEC was
formed in 1992, Tennessee
had won eight straight before
last year’s loss to the
Bulldogs in Athens. Georgia’s
win propels them to the No.
19 spot in the AP poll, while
the Vols dropped to No. 13.
This marks the second time
the Dawgs have been in the
Top 25 this year. They fell out
of the polls after their loss to
USC on Sept. 9. Georgia will
travel to Nashville on
Saturday to take on
Vanderbilt, while Tennessee
will have a bye week.
Alex Brown wins
player of week
Defensive end Alex Brown
won the SEC’s defensive
player of the week honors for
his performance against LSU.
The Gators downed the
Tigers in Baton Rouge on
Saturday 44-15. Brown broke
the school’s record for sacks
in the game, reaching 28 for
his career. The record had
been held by Alonzo Johnson,
who played from 1981 to 1985.
Next week, Florida will take
on the Auburn Tigers.
LSU quarterback
injured in sack
Quarterback Rohan Davey is
questionable for Saturday’s
game against Kentucky.
Davey was injured on a sack
in the team’s loss to Florida.
Before he left the game
toward the end of the first
half, Davey was 7-17 with one
interception. Despite the
possibility of going to
Lexington without his
starting quarterback, LSU
head coach Nick Saban
remains confident about his
team. “We have to take the
games we have moving
forward one game at a time.
We need to play better and
find out what we’re made of.
We’ve played two good
football teams now back-to
back. I think it’s time for
everybody to look in the
mirror and say this is what I
need to do to get better and
get it done,” Saban said. The
1-4 Kentucky Wildcats lost
their third SEC match
against USC on Saturday.
SEC’s toughest
conferences
This year’s inter-conference
matches within the SEC have
been the most competitive in
the nation. After six weeks, 17
SEC vs. SEC games have had
an average scoring margin of
13.88 points per game. Seven
games have been decided by
five points or less. Only five
have been determined by
more than 16 points. Four
teams are currently in the AP
poll, including No. 1 Florida,
No. 9 South Carolina, No. 13
Tennessee, and No. 19
Georgia.

lot of people making a lot of big
plays for us, and we play very
intelligent. The two most im
portant things: Our players are
very competitive and they play
together as a team."
The Gamecocks currently
are on top in the SEC East. By
winning all four of their con
ference games, USC is one of
only three teams remaining in
the conference with perfect
records, with the others being
Florida and Auburn.
The school record for con
secutive victories came in 1984
when South Carolina posted a
9-0 record and were ranked at
the No. 2 spot in the nation be
fore Navy beat them.
The Gamecocks next chal
lenge will come against one of
Holtz's former teams, the
Arkansas Razorbacks. Since
Holtz's arrival at Columbia,
USC has gone 1-1 against the
Razorbacks, including last
year's 27-7 win at USC. But
Holtz remains wary of his for
mer team and fears what
Arkansas can do to the Game
cocks if USC loses their focus.
"This is the wrong time to
be playing Arkansas," Holtz
said.
The game will be televised
nationally by CBS. Kickoff is
slated for 3:30 p.m.

State a first-place vote, give me
some of that stuff you’re
smoking.... Sports Illustrated,
way to go picking Oregon State to
win the national title! Picking an
unusual team to win it all might
have sold a few extra copies, but it
made you look like idiots.... What
do Major Applewhite and Jeff
Hostetler have in common? They
can both do just as well, if not better,
than a Simms.... To Chris Fowler,
Lee Corso and the rest of ESPN
College GameDay, why don’t you
guys come down Nov. 10 when we
upset Florida?... Dennis Green, try
to enjoy your last season at the
Metrodome.... Rob Johnson, just
retire already.... Joe Torre, don’t
take Oakland lightly. The A’s have
got the young arms to match up
with Clemens, Mussina and
Pettitte.... To the U.S. soccer team,
well done on qualifying. Now get
healthy and stay that way until
next summer.... Ah, what the hell,
Rashad Faison for Heisman!
