Women’s soccer falls victim
to Florida’s 47-game streak
Gamecocks can’t
match power of
nation’s longest
winning streak
BY CHRIS FOY
THE GAMECOCK
All streaks are bound to come
to an end. The University of South
Carolina women's soccer team (5
1-2,0-1) dropped its first match of
the season to SEC rival No. 20
Florida, ending its unbeaten
streak at seven.
The 1-0 victory for the Lady
Gators extended their league win
streak to 47 consecutive wins, the
longest current streak in the na
tion.
USC head coach Shelly Smith
feels confident about her team, de
spite the loss.
“I think we went in and showed
we could compete with any team
in the conference and nation,”
Smith said. “We were right in the
match, and I thought our defense
played well and really shut down
their forwards, who are very
good.”
The Lady Gamecocks were out
shot for the first time this season,
as Florida had the advantage 10-7.
Junior midfielder Melinda Carter
and sophomore Becca Epstein led
the Gamecocks with two shots
each.
The Lady Gators scored the
only goal they would need at the
20:15 mark. Florida senior Andi
Sellers made a short pass to All
American Abby Wambach, who
put the ball past USC goalkeeper
Elise Matthews for the score.
Matthews posted four saves in the
outing.
After the game, Florida head
coach Becky Burleigh was com
plimentary to the Gamecock
squad.
“I think South Carolina is a sol
id team. I think they are better
than they were last year,”
Burleigh said. “The new coach
[Smith] is doing a very good job
with them.”
Smith remained assured of her
team's ability to compete against
tough teams. “Our team went into
the match with confidence, and it
showed on the field,” Smith said.
“As far as scoring chances, we
would like to have more, but we
were able fit compete with them
the entire match.”
USC's next game will be Tues
day against in-state rival No. 15
Clemson. The game will start at 7
p.m. in Clemson. Last year, the
Lady Tigers won in Columbia 3-0.
Despite the loss, Smith remains
confident about the team's chances
against the Tigers.
“Our team is disappointed we
couldn't win against Florida, but
we are going into this next match
with Clemson with the same con
fidence,” Smith said.
“Since the beginning of the sea
son our players have stuck to
gether, and we look forward to this
next match.”

Volleyball sweeps Miss, teams
BY PRESTON BAINES
THE GAMECOCK
The No. 18-ranked South Car
olina volleyball team went to Mis
sissippi to play against the states
top two schools and came home
victorious.
Not only did the Lady Game
cocks come out on top, they didn't
drop a game.
Carolina (9-1, 3-1 SEC) started
the rampage by knocking off Mis
sissippi State (6-5,1-2) in Starkville
on Friday night. USC followed the
victory against the Bulldogs with
an equally impressive showing
over the Ole Miss Rebels (4-8,1-2)
in Oxford.
In Sunday's game against the
Rebels, the Gamecocks dominat
ed from start to finish en route to a
30-18,30-11,30-20 victory.
Carolina received contribu
tions from several players. Six dif
ferent Gamecocks had at least five
kills, led by Cally Plummer's 11
and Sam Alban's 10. Plummer and
Alban led a big charge by the
Gamecocks at the net, as USC had
51 kills to the Rebels' 28.
USC head coach Kim Christo
pher was pleased with the com
bined effort by everybody against
Ole Miss.
"We played a total team match
today," she said. "We played well
both offensively and defensively.
It was good to see that Megan
[Hosp] had six kills. The offense
really clicked today."
The Gamecocks breezed
through the first two games but
ran into a little bit of trouble in the
third game. The two teams went
back and forth until Carolina took
a 11-10 lead and never relin
quished it.
In the game against MSU, USC
dominated the first and third
games, winning 30-20 and 30-19.
However, the Bulldogs gave them
some trouble in the second game.
The Bulldogs led most of the
second game until Carolina
evened the score at 28. USC then
pulled ahead and won the game 31
29.
Yajaira Cadet lead the Game
cocks with a career-high 12 kills.
Carolina out-hit the Bulldogs at a
.314 to .040 clip.
The Gamecocks will next hit
the court when they take on SEC
opponent Kentucky in Lexington,
Ky., Friday at 7:00 p.m.
