Elbow Room, 812 Harden St. $2.
THE MITCHELL-RUFF DUO
The Mitchell-Ruff Duo,
America’s oldest continually
performing jazz duo, will open

they’ve toured around the

As intriguing as the
performers was the Enta the
Cypha contest.
This freestyle contest
followed the concert and drew
the most attention from the
crowd. Concert regulars such
as second-year business
student Thad Munn come
every week to watch their
friends duke it out with other
players for the $50 prize. The
crowd determines the fate of
each contestant, voicing its
opinion with boos and cheers.
Because of hip-hop’s fairly
recent acceptance by
mainstream culture, few new
fans came to this event. But
those who did come to explore
hip-hop, such as political
science student Matt Ray, were
impressed. “I heard about it

from a friend,” Ray said. “I’ve
never been to a hip-hop concert
before.” As a rock and roll fan,
Ray said he was used to large
arena events, which some
times sacrifice intimacy. He
appreciated the Elbow Room’s
size. “Being small, it made it
better,” he said.
The Elbow Room is just one
of many outlets for hip-hop
culture, but its shows, together
with the WUSC program, are
the most comprehensive
collection of all that hip-hop
has to offer in Columbia.
As the show continues to
gain clout, more prominent
artists, such as Del tha Funkee
Homosapien (of Gorillaz fame)
of California and Kardinal
Offishall of Canada, are
potential bookings.
Non-Stop Hip-Hop Live can
be seen every Wednesday at
The Elbow Room until Oct. 17,
and heard at 10 p.m. every
Thursday on WUSC 90.5 FM, as

THE MERRY WIVES OF
WINDSOR
USC Theatre South Carolina
will open its fall season with
Shakespeare’s The Merry Wives
of Windsor, which reprises the
role of Falstaff, young Prince
Henry’s drinking buddy in
Henry IV, Part I. Down-on-his
luck Falstaff schemes to seduce
two women so he can get to
their husbands’ money. What
follows is a plot full of
mistaken identity, pranks and
other trickery.
NATIVISM
The program will start at 4 p.m.
in 152 Gambrell Hall, and will
be preceded by a reception at
3:30 p.m. in the Welsh
Humanities Office Building
Reading Room 615.

but probably the most impor

marrying actress Angelina
Jolie, the inspiration for two
songs on the album.
He has also earned the respect
and admiration of famous
musicians; singer/songwriter
Jewel said, “Billy Bob has a
genius for storytelling, and it
should surprise no one that he
brings the same thoughtful,
inspired and sometimes distur

he does to the screen.”
