Local club converts to under-21
BY WILLIAM MILLS
THE GAMECOCK
A new dance club for teens has taken root in the
heart of the Vista.
On the comer of Park and Lady streets, this still
to-be-named club is sure to be a hit among adoles
cents, and an option for underage college students.
The club, which closes at midnight, admits youths
between th£ ages of 13 and 20.
Patrons voted on the new club’s name on Fri
day, the club’s opening night; the name will be an
nounced this week.
Many students will remember Have A Nice Day
Cafe, which used to occupy the same space. Ac
cording to management, SLED shut down Have a
Nice Day Cafe this summer for selling alcohol to
minors. Only water and Coke are sold at the new
club. The old sign for Have A Nice Day Cafe still
hangs outside the club; however, remodeling is
scheduled for this week.
For a $10 cover charge, teens can dance to top-40
music, as well as enjoy laser lights and fog ma
chines. If rubbing elbows with 15- and 16-year-olds
is not below you, then check out the under-age
dance club that used to be Have A Nice Day Cafe.
Models
Agency misleads
aspiring models

with an agency doesn’t ensure a
modeling career.
Paula McLane, owner of
Coastal Talent, an agency at
Isle of Palms, S.C., with 12
years’ experience as an agent,
explained the correct way to
start a modeling career.
McLane suggested simply
sending a picture to an agency.
“Call them and ask if they have
received your picture and say,
‘I would like to meet you.’
Hopefully, you will get an
interview and go from there,”
McLane said. While Manhattan
Model Search didn’t try to
persuade hopefuls to buy pricey
pictures, McLane said other
model searches often mislead
them, telling aspiring actors
they need expensive headshots
and models they need comp
cards.
“One Talent Search called
Faces charged $600 to $700 for
headshots. Good headshots or
comp cards shouldn’t cost
much more than $200 dollars,”
McLane said. “Once you have
got the picture, you can get 100
comp cards mass-produced for
$150 dollars.” A way to get free,
professional pictures, McLane
said, is to call a newspaper and
volunteer to model for its
fashion section. “It’s a
wonderful way to get started
and to get practice,” she said.
“You can’t just walk in off
the street and become a model,”
McLane said. When asked
whether the Manhattan Model
Search gave people false hopes,
she said, “Absolutely! That’s
what they’re counting on!”'
McLane said the Manhattan
Model Search’s way of
eliminating the crowd is
“terrible. That’s a tacky way to
do it.”
McLane warned model
hopefuls that if an agency
wants them, they’ll have to
move to Los Angeles or New
York, something Manhattan
Model Search doesn’t reveal
unless asked. “The agency is
not going to move you up there.
Unless you’re planning to move
to New York, you need a local
agent,” McLane said. Even if
you decide to move, there’s no
guarantee the agency will still
hire you. “I knew one family
who picked up and moved,” she
said, “and when they got there,
they called the agent and no one
ever answered.”
