Women fight on

some punches land and then
some don’t. A flurry of jabs,
hooks and over-hand punches is
all you can see. The crowd roars
with every punch. “Beat the
bitch’s ass!” one spectator
screams.
Minutes later, Precious calls
for a timeout. One of the rules is
the women can call a timeout
when needed, so they won’t get
too badly hurt.
Precious recovers and finishes
the three two-minute rounds.
However, the judges, the entire
crowd of young men, decide who
wins, and to them, Precious’
timeout wasn’t called for.
Thus the first match of the
night ends with Nickki $500 rich
er and once again victorious.
Bringing the concept to
Columbia and actually finding
women willing to take part in the
fights is the job of LaQuasha
Starks. Starks, the club’s man
ager, said at first she was going
to host mud wrestling but
thought too many people had
seen that before.
“It’s unique, it’s something
people in Columbia haven’t seen
before,” Starks said.
For now, the club is only
holding a few fights every
Monday because of the lack of
women willing to get in the ring,
according to Starks.
“Hopefully we are going to
start a real tournament that goes
from week to week and ends at
the end of the month with a
championship fight,A Starks
said. She even has plans for a
tournament between women
from USC and Benedict College.

Enter Josh Hartnett. As
Iago’s counterpart Hugo,
Hartnett carries the weight of the
film. He delivers his lines like a
veteran actor, and his demeanor
makes his character come alive.
Iago is one of Shakespeare’s
greatest characters and probably
one of the greatest villains of all
time; O gets the story right when
it recognizes the story is really
about Iago.
Tim Blake Nelson’s directing
is remarkably fresh and vivid.
Unlike most directors today,
Nelson uses a simple style that

frames the story nicely. One par
ticular scene, a conversation be
tween Hugo and his father
(Martin Sheen), draws deep
meaning out of straightforward
camera work.
O was shot at the College of
Charleston and was originally
scheduled for release in 1998, but
the shootings at Columbine
prompted the studio to hold its
release.
While there are certainly en
joyable elements of this movie,
terrible dialogue and even worse
acting (except in Hartnett’s case)
make O just another attempt to
cash in on Shakespeare’s style.

Oldest WWI vet dies
PARIS (AP) - Raymond
Abescat, believed to be the
world’s oldest World War I
veteran, died Saturday. He was
109.
Abescat joined the military
in October 1912 and spent seven
years with an infantry regiment.
In 1916, he was seriously
wounded near Verdun, where
fighting cost the lives of250,000
French and German soldiers.
After the war, Abescat
joined a financing agency where
he worked until his retirement
in 1957.
