Amanda Mills said someone
stole her white Dodge van, which
was parked on the south side of
Davis College.
The keys were in the van
along with U.S. and USC mail.
U.S. Postal Inspector Dan
Overton was notified of the theft
related to the U.S. mail.
Reporting officer: J. Clarke.
Recovery: Sgt. Flenore
responded to a call about shots
fired at Pine and Stark streets,
where the van was found.

J. Clarke responded to a call
about someone looking in
vehicles. Witnesses said they
saw someone in Marianna T.
Burnett’s vehicle.
Clarke found Anthony
Edward Daniels near Pickens
and Senate streets.
Witnesses later identified
Daniels as the person in
Burnett’s vehicle. DMV said
Daniels didn’t own the vehicle
and that he didn’t have
permission to be in it.
Investigator Q. Young responded
to the scene, and statements
were gathered from three
witnesses. Daniels was arrested
and transported to Richland
County Detention Center.

said someone broke out the
passenger-side window of her
vehicle. There were no signs of
entry, and nothing was missing.
Estimated damage: $200.

Brian Jermaine Elam said
someone damaged his vehicle
early in the morning. Damage
was to passenger-side rear-view
mirror and windshield molding.

Brown said someone took his
unsecured red-and-black 18- '
speed mountain bicycle from the
front of Thomas Cooper Library.
Estimated value: $200. Reporting

BREAK-IN, 1423 WHALEY ST.
Graham C. Bradford said that
while making a delivery to Bates
House, someone removed a $50
portable CD player from his car.
An unknown amount of checks
and $100, property of Gambino’s,
was also stolen.

Kemo Grant said the suspect,
who is the father of her child and
has lived with her, kicked in her
apartment’s front door. The s
suspect was angry with Grant
and pushed her in the face. Grant
escaped by running out of the

HARDEN ST. Leslie C. Wells said
someone broke the rear window
on her 1996 red Ford Aspire. No
entry was gained into the
vehicle. Estimated damage: $300.

K. Harris said that while in her
bedroom, she heard someone
enter the residence hall room
through the front door.
Harris said she went to Jane
E. Howell’s bedroom and saw a
black male, from 20 to 25 years
old, wearing a white tank-top
and baggy blue jeans, holding a
laptop computer.
Harris then noticed another
black male, from 20 to 25 years
old and wearing baggy blue
jeans, in Jennifer Len Meador’s
bedroom.
When the subjects saw Harris,
they put the laptop down and left,
saying they had made a mistake
and were in the wrong room.
Victims said they didn’t see
anything missing. Reporting

he left unattended under a table

Hodges, Energy Department to meet over disposal of plutonium

COLUMBIA, S.C. — Gov. Hodges
will meet with Energy
Department officials today to dis
cuss the federal government’s plan
to ship plutonium to South
Carolina.
The meeting, with Department
of Energy ^Assistant Secretary
Jessie Hill Roberson and
Savannah River Site Operations
Manager Greg Rudy, will be held
during the governor’s planned
visit to the site.
The DOE said Monday they
would postpone shipping the plu
tonium to the state until an
agreement can be made on when
it will leave the state.
The department has agreed to
the postponement until there’s a
legally binding, enforceable
timetable for disposal that will
benefit South Carolina, the gov
ernor’s office said.
Hodges had ordered a public
safety exercise for today, but has
postponed it at the DOE’s request.
“For some reason, they were
really scared of our exercise,” said
spokeswoman Cortney Owings.
During the drill, officers were to
stop a truck similar to the ones
used to transport plutonium.
“I really do believe that by forc
ing their hands on this, we’re
helping the nation move forward
to deciding what’s going to be
done about plutonium,” Hodges
said.
The dispute is over 50 tons of
weapons-grade plutonium head
ing to the Savannah River Site.
Under an agreement with the
Clinton administration, the plu
tonium was to be either turned
into fuel for commercial nuclear
power plants — a plan state Rep.
Henry Brown favors — or
processed into glass rods and
buried in Nevada.
But Hodges says the Bush ad
ministration has been backing off
those very expensive processing
plans, raising the fear that the fed
eral government wants to bury
the plutonium permanently in
South Carolina.
“When South Carolina agreed to
accept plutonium for preparation
for disposition, the Department of
Energy promised that no plutoni
um would be permanently stored
at SRS,” Hodges said.
South Carolina Republican
leaders met with DOE officials
Friday, but South Carolina
Attorney General Charlie Condon
issued a statement that the meet
ing would “set a partisan tone that
would be ultimately damaging.”
“A meeting definitely needs to
take place to prevent South
Carolina from becoming the na
tion’s nuclear dumping ground,”
Condon said.
