Elbow Room
812 Harden St.
Monday-Saturday, 5 p.m.-until
When you’re in the mood to see good bands, Elbow Room is your best bet.
Elbow Room showcases local acts, such as fling (pictured below) and Love
Apple, and national acts, such as Sister Hazel and Jimmie’s Chicken Shack. The
music hall also has a bar to boot.
“Elbow Room offers musical entertainment. We are out there to entertain and
give something to the musical community,” said Jonathan Dunagin, promotions
director for Elbow Room. “It provides students and residents with a venue that is
unparalelled in the city, and it’s conviently located in the middle of Five Points.”
Elbow Room features a wide selection of liqours and beers with Tuesday night
Special being $2 anything night.
“I love this place,” said DJ Static. “Elbow Room is a very cool relaxed place.
It’s a really friendly. I like the vibe here.”
Elbow has been one of the only clubs in Five Points to last more than a
decade.
“It’s a tradition It’s been around since 1984, not many music clubs can say that
in this area,” Dunagin said.
Group Therapy
2107 Greene St.
Monday-Friday, 4 p.m.-until
Saturday, 4 p.m. - 2 a.m.
Sunday, 7 p.m. - 2 a.m.
Need any help? Maybe you should go into therapy — Group
Therapy in Five Points, that is.
“It was the first stop we made when two of our friends turned 21,’
Annie Lee Perryman said. “We did that because it’s the furthest awaj
from their house, and it just seemed like a good place to start our bai
tour.”
Group Therapy is holding Brew Fest 2001 on Saturday, August 25
from 1-9 p.m. More then 80 different beers will be available to sample
to kick off the new school year.
The entire 2100 section of Greene Street will be closed off for this
beer-tasting extravaganza.
“We’ll probably head out to the Brew Fest. It sounds like fun,’
Perryman said.
Some of the beer specials are Rolling Rock, Iron City, Pabst Blue
Ribbon and Shiner Bock, all which $1.50 each. Group Therapy alsc
has Smirnoff Ice for only $2.
And on Thursday nights, Group Therapy hosts an outdoor dance
party with a live DJ and no cover charge.
Dr. Rocco's
Corner of Greene and Harden streets
Monday-Friday, 4 p.m.-until
Saturday, 4 p.m.-2 a.m.
Sunday, 7 p.m.-2 a.m.
When hot days at the beginning of the school year threaten to get the best
of you, there’s only one tropical oasis to go to in Columbia to cool down? No,
not the Smoothie King; you want to head over to Dr. Rocco’s.
Not only can you get an ice cold beer, it’s the only place in Columbia
where you can get an Everclear daiquiri and sit outside, watching the cars
drive down Harden Street.
“Nothing beats getting an Everclear daiquiri for $5. Two of those and
you’re good to go,” said Peter Johnson, a USC graduate from the College of
Journalism and Mass Communications.
So is the Everclear daiquiri the “nectar of the gods?”
“When I’m sipping on a daiquiri it seems like all I can think about is
tropical beaches and sand, even though I’m really stuck in Columbia,” said
senior biology major Laquisha Stokes. “It’s a nice diversion from classes and
studying.”
Delaney's
Music Pub
741 Saluda Ave.
Monday-Sunday 11 a.m.-2 p.m.
The second largest seller of Guinness in South
Carolina for 2000 — yep, that’s Delaney’s.
“I think Delaney’s is a very nice bar in Five Points,”
Columbia resdient Jimmy Lockhart said.
Though Lockhart comes to Delaney’s a couple of
times a month, he doesn’t frequent the bar on the
infamous “Pint Night,” where all beers on tap are served
in pint glasses for only $2.
Because it’s not only a bar but a pub, Delaney’s
offers a full menu that varies from light appetizers to
full-course meals.
Their late-night menu includes fried , mushrooms,
buffalo wings, cheese sticks, fries, chicken tenders and
Philly cheese steaks.
And to wash that all down, Delaney’s sells 25
different beers on tap, including Guinness, Harp,
Killian’s, Sierra Nevada, Sam Adams, Bass,
Newcastle and Fosters.
“There’s good quality people, the service is nice and
there is a good beer selection,” Lockhart said.
