in upholding high standards that re
flect these principles. While the all
women’s fall 2000 GPA was 2.83,
the all-sorority GPA was 3.11. Dur
ing the same semester, the all-men’s
GPA was 2.76 and the all-fraterni
ty GPA was 2.87.
“We’re pretty proud of this,”
Kimball said. “It’s proof that we do
more than just party.” Many chap
ters also have mandatory study hours
for new members.
Greeks are involved with vir
tually every student organization on
campus: sports, honor societies, stu
dent government and religious or
ganizations, just to name a few. They
also have merited some of USC’s
most prestigious awards and posi
tions.
Greeks are also involved in com
munity service. Last year, Greeks
raised $76,042 for charity and com
pleted 14,614 volunteer hours.
Each chapter has its own
“philanthropy”, a charity or service
organization it helps. Many Greeks
turn their service projects into cam
pus social events, a fun and prof
itable way to help others. Some
examples are a jail-a-thon, a
teeter-totter marathon, a tug-of-war
contest and a game-ball run.
For the past several years, soror
ity members have come together
to support one charitable organiza
tion during recruitment. This year,
members are encouraged to bring
school supplies (crayons, pencils,
notebooks, etc.) to orientation Sun
day to support the governor’s First
Steps Program for children.
Though many students may gain
opportunities for scholarship, ser
vice, leadership and friendship in
Greek organizations, these oppor
tunities are available to non-Greeks
also.
“I have friends in fraternities and
sororities, which is cool, but I’m per
fectly happy not being in one,” said
USC junior Melissa Mortimer. “I’ve
found other opportunities for in
volvement.”
Floyd says Greek organizations
have even more benefits than he re
alized when he joined. “It’s a great
way to establish yourself, to meet
people,” he said.
While many undergraduates may
be unsure if they want to become
part of a Greek organization,
Braddock suggests that they go
through recruitment anyway. “I did
n’t know anything about it, but when
I went through rush, I fell in love
with my sorority,” she said. “I’ve
