Price excellent choice
for journalism dean
We at The Gamecock wish to offer a hearty and heartfelt con
gratulations to Henry Price of the College of Journalism and
Mass Communications for being named interim dean.
The college has been searching for a replacement dean ever since
Judy VanSlyke Turk resigned last year, finding a temporary replacement
in Ronald Farrar. Farrar proved a worthy and capable interim dean, but
when he announced he would be retiring at the end of the summer, the
college was once again forced to search for a replacement.
The students and faculty of the J-school need not worry. The next
choice for dean was never more than a few steps down the hall.
Price, known as a driven, brilliant professor to colleagues and a holy
terror to undergraduates, is the ideal man for the job. Staff members of
The Gamecock fondly recall their days under Price's tutelage, when
Price would introduce himself on the first day of his beginning copy
editing course with the now-famous quote, "I don'tgive a damn about
your self-esteem."
Yes, he seemed rough. Yes, those three months were quite possibly
the hardest a student would ever have to live through. But we learned
under Price. He taught us the basics of copy editing, drilling them into
our heads so severely we were left no choice but to learn them. When
we survived his class, we were automatically looked on with respect
and admiration from other students.
But beyond more than 30 years of teaching experience, Price has
been president of Faculty Senate and associate dean of undergraduate
studies for the College of Journalism and Mass Communications.
Price is the perfect choice for dean. As his students, we knew all
along he was at the top.

Mary Jane: Canada s new cash crop, eh
Canadians are stupid. I know
this isn’t a new concept, but

keep proving
they’re lacking
in mental
capacity, eh.
I came to
this realization
Sunday
afternoon, while
watching
MSNBC’s “Pot
Wars: Canada’s
New Cash
Crop.” In this
report, it Became
obvious that the Royal Canadian
Mounted Police have no idea how
to deal with marijuana growers and
traffickers, eh.
The report profiled the growing
of B.C. bud, a high-grade form of
marijuana, in British Columbia and
what the Mounties are trying to do
to deal with it. This marijuana is
making it’s way into the United
States, selling for up to $70 an ounce,
eh.
There are several thousand “grow
houses” in British Columbia where
hundreds of plants are grown and
then sold in Canada and the United
States, eh.
Some of the growers run several
houses and make several thousands
of dollars a week and more than $1
billion in profits per year in British
Columbia alone, eh.
Canada is known for its lenient
drug laws. But now, the Mounties
are being pressured by their own
government and the United States
to become harsher in their drug laws,
eh.
The drug enforcement division
of the Mounties defiantly needs
some help when it comes to raiding
and arresting the people in these
houses, eh.
They seem to have the raiding
part down; it’s the arresting part
they need to work on, eh.
Here is the situation, eh:
The Mounties find out where
the grow houses are, stake them out
and make the raid, eh.
They remove all the marijuana
from the house in garbage bags and
burn it (yeah, I bet they “burn” it)
and put a sign outside the house
they raided, eh.
“It doesn’t take a
genius to figure out
that if no arrests are
made, then problems
won’t only continue,
but will also get worse.
If the Canadians want
to stop the “pot
problem,’’ then they
have to start cracking
down, and that means
arresting the growers,
eh”
That’s it. The people who are
running the houses are taken away
in handcuffs, but aren’t arrested, eh.
One of the Mounties said they
