Vista restaurant. The fire caused extensive damage to the historic building's roof and also caused water damage to the building’s
interior. Two firefighters were injured during the call.
Tuition to jump by 10.4%

The USC board of trustees
finalized plans Friday for a 10.4
percent raise in tuition for all
students.
The new tuition will increase in
state tuition by $195 per semester,
and out-of-state tuition by $504 per
semester, beginning this fall.
Faculty and staff will also feel
the sting of the budget cuts; the
approved plan includes 9 percent
cuts in every department.
With more than 36,500 students
at USC’s eight campuses around the
state, many students and tamihes
will be affected by the difference
and, with fall semester only a couple
of months away, searching for the
funds to cover their own financial
needs.
Because of state budget cuts,
USC isn’t the only university facing
cuts in programs and increases in
tuition. Clemson University
increased its in-state tuition by 41.8
percent and out-of-state tuition by
15.3 percent last Wednesday.
With such a large increase,
many USC students are thinking
less negatively about USC’s tuition
increases.
At the Friday’s board of trustees
meeting, Student Government
President Corey Ford acknowledged
thanked the board for approving a
reasonable increase.
“We do appreciate this budget,”
Ford said at the meeting.
“I definitely don’t think that the
students are going to be happy with
the tuition increase, but given the
circumstances that we had in the
budget, we were pretty lucky. The
university had the option to raise the
tuition as much as they wanted to,”

The College of
Journalism and
Mass Comnxmkaions
has named a new
dean — at least
temporarily.
I X I Henry Price, a
Henry Price longtime professor
at the college, will take over as
interim dean on Aug. 16 after Ron
Farrar, who’s served as interim
dean for the past two years, retires.
Price joined USC’s faculty in
1969. Since then, he has taught
copy editing and public opinion
and propaganda courses. He has
also served as chairman of faculty
senate, chairmen of the college’s
print sequence and associate dean
for academics and undergraduate
studies.

Turk left the position two years
ago, the college has been
conducting a national search for a
replacement.
But with budget cuts looming
in the background, the search has
been unsuccessful.
“It came to be a necessity
when the dean search didn’t
work,” Price said. “Without a new
dean ... they had to do another
interim situation.”
