Turner, DreamWorks
strike movie deal
ATLANTA (AP)-Turner
Broadcasting System Inc. and
DreamWorks SKG announced a
broadcast licensing agreement
allowing the cable network to air such
movies as Gladiator, American Beauty
and Cast Away.
Turner will pay $350 million to
$450 million for rights to broadcast 74
DreamWorks films released between
1997 and 2007. In 1999, Turner signed
a smaller syndication deal for about 50
DreamWorks films.
“Frankly, we would like to have all
the DreamWorks we can get,” said
Robert H. Levi, Turner’s president of
program planning and acquisitions.
The agreement was announced
Tuesday.
Since its 1994 founding by
Hollywood moguls Steven Spielbeig,
Jeffrey Katzenberg and David Geffen,
the studio’s pictures have averaged
$80 million in domestic box office
revenue, triple the industry average,
Levi said.
While movies have become ratings
disappointments for the major
networks, cable broadcasters such as
USA, Lifetime and Turner have
thrived with original productions and
older theatrical releases.
TBS officials say their August
broadcast premiere of As Good As It
Gets with Jack Nicholson and Helen
Hunt was the most-watched broadcast
premiere in cable history. The program
was seen in 5.41 million homes,
according to Nielsen Media Research.
