USC's Jazz Band
prepares for prism concert
by Amanda Silva
The Gamecock
In celebration of spring, USC’s School
of Music will perform a prism concert
on Monday, April 16.
“The concert itself is really just for fun
and for the love of music and spring,” said
graduate student Eric Wilkinson, the
Columbia Chamber Orchestra conductor.
Aaron Copland’s original 13-instrument
version of “Appalachian Spring” will be the
centerpiece of the performance.
“The main body of the concert,
‘Appalachian Spring,’ is a wonderful piece,”
Wilkinson said.
According to Wilkinson, the concert
will be performed in such a way as to
represent the idea of a prism reflecting a
ray of light into many different colors and
directions.
“I think it’s a great idea, and to have it
centered around the Copland piece is
brilliant,” senior voice performance major
Scott Guinn said.
According to Wilkinson, the different
directions represent the different places
where the performers come from, and the
spectrum spotlights the locations from
around the hall where the musicians will be
performing solo pieces.
Wilkinson said Copland’s “celebration
of a simpler past but optimistic and hopeful
for the future” defined the essence of the
prism concert.
The 13 musicians are graduate and
undeigraduate students and several musical
arts doctoral candidates.
“This is going to be completely new and
more visual than I think we’re used to,” said
second-year piano/oigan performance major
Heather Janney.
Janney said the best thing about the
performance is that it isn’t a required
program, so it won’t be a routine concert
for the performers or the audience.
“I like the idea of him (Wilkinson) doing
‘I think it’s a great idea, and
to have it centered around
the Copland piece is
brilliant.’

a concert that is not required in any way,
but more just for the fun of music,” Janney
said.
Though the program falls on the Monday
after Easter, Wilkinson said it wasn’t
necessarily scheduled that way.
“It just seemed to work out as a program
thing, but also with everybody’s schedule,
since we don’t have classes on Monday,”
Wilkinson said.
Wilkinson has publicized the event as
much as possible.
“He’s really going all-out to make this
a well-attended event,” Janney said.
This is good for the performers,
according to Janney, because the musicians
often end up playing before small crowds,
regardless of the amount of work they have
put into a performance.
“It’s nice when we have a semi-full
house, at least,” Janney said.
Guinn said the inspirational theme of
spring is going to make the concert a fun
project.
“It’s a privilege to be a part of it. I’m
glad he (Wilkinson) asked me to do it, and
I’m looking forward to it,” he said.
The concert will be held at the School
of Music recital hall at 4 p.m. Monday. The
free program is open to the public.
