This Week in USC History April 11, 1980 — USC President James Holderman an nounced that Egyptian President Anwar Sadat wouldn’t come to USC to receive an honorary degree. Sadat said his American visit was limited to Washington, D.C. Wednesday, April 11, 2001 Students take a break at Adriana’s Gelateria in Five Points. Studying, talking with friends and just relaxing are common coffehouse rituals. The three within walking distance for USC students are Cool Beans, Immaculate Consumption and Adriana’s. ■ Cool Beans Prices at this coffee house are moderately low, ranging from 95 cents-$3.50. This coffee is great, with a warm and wholesome taste. I ordered the cappuccino, which was really rich, and my friend Amanda tried the White Mocha, deeming it good and sweet. Cool Beans has regular house blends and fancier drinks like mochaccinos, white mochas and lattes. They also have speciality sandwiches and desserts ranging from canot cake to kahlua cake. In Cool Beans, the atmosphere is very “art deco”. Andy Warhol would have probably hung out here. To me, there is a combination jazzy and Spanish feel. The coffee house consists of mix-and-match tables and chairs with art work for sale on the walls. They also have borrowable books on the shelves, which I think is really cool. Overall, Cool Beans has a fresh modem but classical look. It’s a good place to snuggle up to read or to study late at night. They had several rooms to lounge in, and one room reserved for non-smokers. ■ Immaculate Consumption Prices are low, ranging from 95 cents $2.50. Here, coffees are refreshing and exotic. IC has a world of coffee flavors, such as Brazilian, Costa Rican and Peruvian, as well as Kenya, Sumatra and Java blends. IC also has lunch specials that include sandwiches and soups, but have a limited dessert selection — mainly cookies and Tiramisu. The atmosphere at IC caters to the young and modem. Rich, bold techno colors cover the walls. IC is very neat and clean. Outdoor seating is limited, but inside, it’s spacious and comfortable. At IC, I tried the Mocha, which was absolutely wonderful. Amanda chose the hot chocolate, which was made from real ingredients, not a mix. She said it was the best hot chocolate she’s ever tasted. ■ Adriana’s Gelateria Prices are moderate, from $1.50 $3.75. Coffee variety includs the usual blends, mochas, cappuccinos, lattes and frappes. We bought Italian sodas flavored in raspberry and orange. They were extremely refreshing. Adriana’s also serves a variety of food and desserts —bagels, soups, sandwiches, pizza, Tiramisu, cheesecake and ice cream. Adriana’s is spacious and funky with a tecluio feel. It has a new-age atmosphere diat is attractive to people of all ages, but mostly college students. Adriana’s is very clean with outdoor seating available. The location great — right in the heart of Five Points. (AP) - Small mirrors distributed to promote the Johnny Depp film Blow have reflected badly on the drug-trafficker tale. Critics say the rectangular miners promote drug use because dealers use the items as cutting boards for cocaine. The souvenir mirrors, contained in a rubber sleeve featuring the Blow title, were distributed with invitations to advance screenings of the film, which opened nationally Friday. They were also handed out in bars and outside sporting events, The Orange County Register reported Friday. Tracy Aaron, 35, of Cypress, Calif., said she was angry that her husband received one of the mirrors after an NCAA playoff game in Anaheim. “I was disgusted,” she said. “They’re passing out drug paraphernalia, basically. ’ New Line Cinema, which is distributing Blow, said it gave away between 200 and 1,000 mirrors. The film is about the collapse of a real-life cocaine empire during the 1970s. The lead character, George Jung, played by Depp, is in a federal prison on various drug charges through 2014. “Anyone who sees Blow recognizes that this highly acclaimed film does not promote or glorify the use of drugs, ” said Steve Elzer, senior vice president of New Line’s corporate communications. ■ Ben Affleck to star in next movie from Tom Clancy series f NEW YORK (AP) — Alec Baldwin did it.
