The Philippines Frame -by—— Frame A student photographer discovers mis roots by Erin O’Neal The Gamecock Michael Ronquillo doesn’t remember much from his first trip to the Philippines as a toddler. When he returned seven years later as a 10-year old child, he enjoyed playing games and being around his family. Now, on his most recent visit to the Philippines, Ronquillo has brought home pictures of his experiences instead of just stories. At the Russell House on Thursday, Ronquillo presented a slide show of selected photographs taken in the Philippines for the Filipino-American Student Association and other students. His pictures, shot on a total of 30 rolls of film, include family and strangers and bring out the vibrant olors and flavors of Filipino culture. Western influences can be seen on billboards nd political advertisements. Beginning in lementary school, students are taught English. Vhat they lack in technological amenities, they nake up for with close-knit relationships within he family and community. Another series of Ronquillo’s work will be featured at Mediafest, an event to be held at McMaster College, April 20-21. He will present more than 200 of his “Fist” shots in a continuous slide exhibition. The slides, a series of friends and strangers striking a similar pose, are part of a photo documentary comprising 1,000 images. (AP) - A film crew working on “Ali,” a movie based on the life of Muhammad Ali, rescued an 8-year-old boy whose foot got stuck under a hotel escalator rail. Nicolas Potolsky was on an upward escalator in the Fontainebleau Hilton late Wednesday when his rubber beach shoe got sucked under the rail of the top step, hotel spokeswoman Lisa Cole said. Crew members filming a victory scene in a neaiby ballroom heard the boy scream and ran over to help. A hotel worker who heard Nicolas’ cry quickly shut off the escalator, officials said. About a dozen movie workers used crowbars to pry the rail open and free the child after they tried unsuccessfully to pull back the rubber handrail. “He (Nicolas) was more freaked out then anything,” said Miami-Dade County emergency medical technician Frank Fernandez, who was working with the film crew when the accident happened. “It was sucking in his foot — it could’ve shredded it.” Nicolas, who was staying at the resort with his mother, was taken to Mount Sinai Medical Center for X-rays, investigators said. Fernandez said the boy suffered braises and cuts.
