sculpts gamecock

Customers who walk into Russell
Blackwell’s Spartanburg shop might
encounter the biggest gamecock they’ve
ever seen.
Blackwell, originally from Chesnee,
has welded a huge sculpture in the shape
of a gamecock. The garnet-and-black
sculpture weighs 85 pounds, complete
with feathers.
“I was originally going to do a
rooster and had seen stickers with the
gamecock on them and thought I’d use
that as a base for my idea,” Blackwell
said.
According to Blackwell, he studied
books on roosters to accurately capture
all the details, right down to the number
of tail and wing feathers.
Blackwell is sending slides of his
work, including the gamecock, to the
Carolina Foothills Artist Center, a venue
for local artists to showcase their work.
“I need to have a body of work to
show the arts council,” he said. “I have
to show them what my body of work
has developed from, kind of like an
overview.”
Blackwell was working near Salt
Lake City, Utah, five years ago when
he decided to open his own shop.
The Colonial Gallery, opened six
months ago and built entirely by
Blackwell, features his primary pieces,
weather vanes and free-standing
sculptures.
So far, Blackwell’s work has been
featured on news programs in the
Upstate and in the Spartanburg Herald
Journal.
Blackwell plans to put his pieces
on eBay once he has built enough
publicity to get good selling prices and
become established as an artist.
His latest project involves a 500
piece butterfly series.
The butterflies are all different sizes
and are painted from books Blackwell
studied while sculpting them.
Blackwell said he’s never been to
art school nor had any formal training.
“No, I’m just one of those people
who has always been artistic.”
