Forbes names Cruise
No. 1 celebrity of 2000
Associated Press
Cruise
NEW YORK
Money isn’t every
thing, right? Fame
together with
money is. Or so
Forbes figures.
Using a formula
that combines the
two, the magazine
says Tom Cruise
tops its latest
Celebrity 100 list.
Hollywood stars and athletes
dominated the list, released Thursday,
with 26 coming from the world of sports,
including No. 2 Tiger Woods.
Chefs, models and authors made it
too, as well as what the magazine called
“the non-celebrity celebrity, courtesy
of reality television.”: Richard Hatch,
the winner of last summer’s Survivor,
ranked 77th.
Making the top 10 were three teen'
sensations — Britney Spears, the
Backstreet Boys and ’N Sync.
Jennifer Lopez, who recently had
theNo. 1 movie and album in the country,
made her debut on the list, as did Ben
Affleck and the Friends women: Jennifer
Aniston, Courteney Cox Arquette and
Lisa Kudrow.
The third annual Forbes Celebrity
100 quantified celebrity by combining
earnings with star power, including press
clips, TV and radio mentions, cover
stories and Web hits. In its March 19
issue, Forbes determined who made the
cut by totaling up top celebrity earners
in 14 categories. Then media attention
and other “metrics of fame” were
factored in.
Last year’s No. 1, Julia Roberts, fell
to No. 16 despite her hit movie Erin
Brockovich and being the odds-on
favorite for the best actress Oscar later
this month.'
“She just didn’t make as much
money this year as she did last year,” said
Pete Newcomb, the senior editor who
oversaw compilation of the list.
Noting that Forbes considers itself a
capitalist tool and not a pop-culture bible
like Entertainment Weekly, he said:
“Money gets the priority weight.”
He also said the rankings aren’t meant
to suggest Cruise wields the clout of
studio heads.
Cruise, who starred in last summer’s
biggest box-office success, Mission:
Impossible 2, vaulted to No. 1 from No.
20 last year. Not only did he earn
much more money in 2000 than in 1999
($43.2 million vs. $27 million), but his
media exposure increased dramatically.
In 2000, Cruise racked up 11
cover stories and 139,000 Web hits as
opposed to one cover story and about
27,000 Web hits in 1999.
Cmsie has been making news because
of his breakup with Nicole Kidman after
10 years of marriage.
The Beatles, who broke up three
decades ago, came in No. 3 and got the
most Web hits —-1.43 million, way ahead
of the next highest number, 981,000 for
Spears.
The Top 10 in order: Tom Cruise,
Tiger Wbods, the Beatles, Britney Spears,
Bruce Willis, Michael Jordan, the
Backstreet Boys, ’N Sync, Oprah Wmfrey
and Mel Gibson.
