people, too —just human beings who felt
justified in their actions. It’s a play that
needs to be put on until we finally leam
from it and continue to prevent it from
happening again,” Cone said.
Helping the actors identify with their
characters is Terry Smith, who considers
the play “heart-rending.”
“Ghetto” offers the audience a chance
to “grasp intellectually and emotionally”
the trials of the Holocaust, according to
Smith.
Director of the play and artistic di
rector of Theatre South Carolina, Jim
O’Connor, commented that the play falls
within the commitment to present “plays
that matter.”
“Ghetto,” awarded Israel’s play of
the year, premieres Feb. 16-25 at
Longstreet Theatre. Performances are at
8 p.m. on Tuesdays through Saturdays and
3 p.m. on Sundays. Tickets are $6 for stu
dents, $8 for seniors citizens, faculty, staff
and military, and $ 10 for general admit

performances of conceits, poetry, cabarets
and original plays. The play-within-a-play
presents entertainment using skits, songs
and puppets to capture life in the
ghetto.
Joining Kaplan in the cast will be
graduate and undergraduate students from
USC. Theatre students also help in the
backstage duties as managers, set designers
and costuming.
According to stage manager Marshall
Span, a fourth year student in the
College of Liberal Arts, helping in the
production of the play is “tough, but fun.”
The cast has been learning about the
Holocaust as preparation for their per
formances. Actors and actresses researched
their individual character’s roles before
production in order to better understand
and portray them.
Stephen Cone, a third year student
in the College of Liberal Arts, plays the
young Nazi officer Kittel. Cone says that
the research helped show the cast that
the characters were representations of
real people. Cone commented that play
ing a Nazi officer is challenging on stage.

pretty depressing journey to get into the
