Baseball team sweeps up the competition in Charleston
by Kyle Almond
The Gamecock
Last year on its way to a 56-10
i season, the USC baseball team opened
the year with a school record 22 straight
victories.
Could it happen again?
The Gamecocks are off to another
blazing start in 2001, winning their first
six games of the season and taking all three
games at the Berkeley Electric
Cooperative Shootout at The Citadel.
No. 8 USC knocked off a trio of
Virginia universities in the three-day event,
and won by a combined score of 29-7.
Old Dominion, Richmond and
Virginia Commonwealth all went down
to Carolina, which will face Delaware
State in a three-game series at home
starting Friday.
South Carolina 16, Old Dominion 3 (Sun
day)
Behind right fielder Brennan Dees’
career-high five hits, the Gamecocks
walloped the Monarchs 16-3 on Sunday.
Dees went 5-for-5 on the day, hitting
two home runs and three RBIs. He is tied
for the team lead in homers with Marcus
McBeth, who also hit two home runs in
the game, and second to McBeth in RBIs
with eight on the year.
USC head coach Ray Tanner was
encouraged by the senior co-captain’s big
day.
“Brennan had a tremendous day at
the plate,” Tanner said. “He did
everything we could ask out of our
three-spot hitter.
“We are playing very well right now,
and it was good to see our bats get going.”
Junior southpaw Gary Bell (2-0) got
the win for USC, pitching 6 1/3 innings
and allowing only one earned run.
South Carolina 4, Richmond 2 (Saturday)
USC jumped out early on the Spiders
and held on tight to its lead the rest of the
game to win 4-2.
Michael Floyd’s single brought home
two runs in the first, and Steve Thomas
had a RBI in the fourth to give USC a
four-run advantage.
Richmond fought back in the later
innings, but couldn’t score on the
Carolina bullpen.
Chris Spigner (2-0) put forth
another strong outing in the No. 2 spot
in the USC rotation, striking out six
Richmond batters and allowing only two
runs.
Lee Gronkiewicz, who was out with
an injury most of last season, notched his
second save of the year.
Yaron Peters got the other RBI for
use.
South Carolina 7, VCU 2 (Friday)
Kip Bouknight etched his name into
the USC record books in his second start
. of the season Friday, becoming the school’s
all-time leader in wins with 37.
Bouknight (2-0) befuddled VCU
batters most of the night and surpassed
Tim Lewis’ record set in 1976. *
The senior right-hander from
Gaston, S.C., struck out seven and
allowed only five hits in the game.
Friday’s game was a pitcher’s duel
between Bouknight and VCU’s Marc
Fisher for six innings. Then USC
freshman Landon Powell broke the
stalemate with a two-run shot to open the
scoring.
The Rams tied the game 2-2 in the
bottom of the sixth, but USC busted out
for five runs in the seventh to seal the
win.
Powell brought home two more
runners with a single, and McBeth blew
the game open with a three-run homer.

Lady Gamecocks pull off pair
of upsets in Fiesta Bowl Classic
by Kyle Almond
The Gamecock
The Lady Gamecocks softball team traveled to Phoenix
this past weekend to face some of the toughest teams in the
nation, and it came out with a couple of wins to show for it.
No. 18 USC (5-4) faced five teams in the Fiesta Bowl
Classic, and four of them were nationally ranked.
The Lady Gamecocks upset No. 12 Nebraska in the
competition’s first game Friday and also defeated New
Mexico State. But USC fell to a trio of top-ten teams in No.
6 Arizona State, No. 4 Washington and No. 3 Arizona.
Junior ace pitcher Megan Matthews was the heart and soul
behind the Nebraska upset. Matthews (3-0) struck out a
season-high 14 Nebraska batters in a 2-1, extra-inning
victory.
Megan Donohoo’s home run gave USC an early advantage,
and Lady Gamecock Debralee Troesh was walked with the
bases loaded in extra innings to give Carolina the win.
USC bombarded New Mexico State 6-0 on Saturday for
its other win of the tournament.
Freshman Stacey Johnson (2-2) was the beneficiary of four
I USC home runs, two of them coming from Joyce McMillin.
Carolina put up a decent fight against Washington, losing
5-1, but the Lady Gamecocks were outmatched by the Arizona
teams. The host Sun Devils of Arizona State waxed USC 8-2,
while the Arizona Wildcats won 8-0.
USC will be on the road next weekend as they travel to
Tampa to compete in another five-game tournament.
