I ‘Grand Theft’ describes band

| [REVIEW
CD: Blame Everyone
ARTIST: Grand Theft Audio
GRADE: ☆ out of ☆☆☆☆
Grand Theft Audio’s debut release,
Blame Everyone does not aim to please.
Frontman Jay Butler says, “Wfe wanted to
make a record that either completely
inspires people or makes them never want
to hear it again.
We wanted to make a record that’s
gonna bug the shit out of people, but in
the best possible way.” Lucky for the band,
they succeeded.
Demonstrating a command over the
most basic power chords, GTA manages
to create a somewhat catchy rock/pop
sound that seems to get stuck somewhere
between the brain’s processing center and
one’s eardrum.
The result is either an hour-long con
templation of the sometimes surprising
ly intelligent lyrics or one massive
headache.
The name says it all for GTA.
“Borrowing” the hard-driving rhythms of
such rock gods as Rob Zombie and AC/DC,
adding a taste of Prodigy’s electronic sound
and dashing in the tongue-in-cheek lyrics
of punk rockers like the Sex Pistols and
The Clash, GTA is a potpourri of
musical genres and sounds.
It would appear the band has their
collective hands in too many cookie jars.
Butler notes, “We wanted to create
a band that was like all of your favorite
bands at the same time.”
While GTA succeeds in copying these
styles, they don’t necessarily forge them
as well as they could. The problem is that
many of their “inspirations” are way out $
of this band’s league: the originals did it
first, and they did it better.
Blame Everyone appeals to the white
adolescent males of America.
Featuring songs such as “Stoopid Ass”
and “Drugs and Girls,” it would appear
the band is trying a little too hard to push
an image.
Many of the lyrics, however, go way
over the heads of the angry white boys
they market to.
If the same old power-driven guitar
and sluned lyrics appeal to you, then this
is the album you’ve been waiting to
buy. The verdict: buy with caution.
