ty would have to either get more mon
ey from the state or cut other programs.
“Something has to give for there
to be more money,” Welsh said.
But Nolan said the university might
need to increase the level of funding to
get the quality students necessary to earn
an invitation to the AAU.
“If we’re trying for AAU [status],
we need to be focusing on quality of
grad students, not quantity,” she said.
She used the example of having 20
students making $1,000 a semester.
“Why not recruit ten of the best stu
dents and give them more money?” she
asked.
According to Nolan, assistants at
some institutions don’t pay tuition.
“They may not get paid a whole lot,”
she said. “But they don’t have to pay a
whole lot.”
Some students almost certainly take
second jobs, Nolan said. And while the
university discourages — but does not
prohibit — second jobs, Nolan admit
ted it was a contradiction to do so
with current stipend levels.
“Absolutely,” she said. “And that is
why we can’t prevent it.”
