The Gamecock
As another season of Lady Game
cock basketball begins, the team is look
ing to build on past experiences for their
first winning season in four years.
Many drink the 1999-00 season was more
productive than the record of 13-15 re
flects.
After a season-ending injury to team
leader Shaunzinski Gortman, the team
was forced to bond together and work as
a group to win games.
“We made some steps forward as a
team last year,” head coach Susan Wtlvius
said. “Losing Gortman midway through
the season was disappointing, but I felt
that we stepped up as a team and did some
good things.”
The senior leadership of Annie Lester,
Slianta Jeffcoat and Gisie Key helped keep
the Gamecocks on their feet as the raw
talent of sophomores Crishna Hill, Jo
celyn Penn and Shannon Segres con
tributed with a year of solid experience.
Freshmen Kelly Morrone and Petra
Ujhelyi earned valuable playing time and
confidence during their first collegiate
seasons, while showing outstanding play
ing ability.
Morrone, the only Gamecock with
the experience at point guard to replace
Gortman, was thrown headfirst into the
SEC fire. She proved herself by posted
outstanding numbers, leading the team in
3-point shooting (ranking third in die SEC)
and assists with 78 for the season.
Ujhelyi proved to be a force in the
paint for the Lady Gamecocks, averaging
6.2 points, 6.4 rebounds, 2.0 assists, 1.0
blocks, and 1.5 steals per game. She record
ed one double-double against Ole Miss
and scored a career high of 20 points against
Florida Atkin tic. Ujhelyi also led the Game
cocks in rebounds with 180 and blocks
with 27 for the 1999-2000 season.
Another Gamecock with a solid sea
son was junior Jocelyn Penn. With last
season's 76 steals added to her freshman
total of 79, Penn moved into the Top 15
in career steals. She also led the SEC in
