Fans follow superstitions
to ensure football success

The Gamecock
Ever walk into a room during the middle of a foot
ball game that friends are watching? The team starts to
falter the moment you arrive, and you find yourself os
tracized by your closest friends for bringing bad luck to
the team.
You’re not alone. Fans can have strange superstitions
when it comes to their favorite sport. USC football fans
are no different.
“Every home game that we’ve won I’ve worn my lucky
USC hair ribbon (garnet with ‘Gamecocks’ in white)...Co
incidence? I think not,” said Becky McClellan, a sports
administration and journalism junior.
It’s “luck” that superstitions focus on, so superstitious
people attempt to capture luck’s power and transform it
for their use.
Andrew Rogers, a tuba player for Carolina’s band, said
if the tuba section goes to Hooters before a football game,
USC wins.
“Every time the tuba section didn’t go to Hooters as
a whole, Carolina lost,” Rogers said.
The section didn’t get to make thgir trip to Hooters
this past Friday because one third of them were travelling
on the bus to Florida. Coincidence? Maybe.
Journalism junior Colin Duncan said, “Ever since high
school I’ve made it a tradition to sit on my couch, and I
don’t get up while watching the USC game.”
Now he says he and his girlfriend have to go to the
games together, but if they separate, it’s doom for the
Gamecocks.
Advertising Junior Karen Miller, and Geography Ju
nior Christine Eggers think going to the games might jinx
USC’s record.
“I don’t go to the games at all. I was busy those first
couple of Saturdays. Now I’m scared that it if I go, they’ll
lose, and it will be my fault.” Miller said.
“I don’t usually go to USC football games...ever... in
fact, it seems that since I quit going, we are now winning,
so maybe my game ritual to ensure a victory is not to at
tend,” Eggers said.
Colleen Dixon, political science junior, sings the al
ma mater before every home and away game.
“I always eat Chinese food Thursdays before the game,”
said offensive lineman Travelle Wharton.
Paula LeGette, journalism junior, has a lot of super
stitions for Gamecock football.
“I have to wear a Gamecock decal on my cheek and
a #21 jersey to the game,” LeGette said.
At the game, she says that when she watches the field
from her 2nd row seat the team messes up, so she must
watch the big screen in order to ensure victory.
LeGette even wore USC clothing at the Clemson-N.C.
State game in Death Valley, claiming USC would have lost
to Kentucky if she didn’t.
According to “The Dictionary of Omens and Super
stitions,” cheering and chanting evolved from the ancient
idea that doing so drives away bad luck spirits from the
object in question—in this case, South Carolina football.
Hint to those who are lucky enough to go to the Clem
son game this weekend—scream like banshees!

money or social situations.
According to Traxler, it’s unlikely
two people can have the same dream
at the same time. A few people, how
ever, experience having the same dream
over and over. Recurrent dreams, which
can continue for years, may be treated
as any other dream. One may look
for parallels between the dream and
the dreamer. Sleep needs vary from
person to person.
Lucid dreaming is what occurs
when people tell themselves what to
dream. Sometimes people experi
ence this type of dreaming sponta
neously.
The definition can be broken down
into two types of lucid dreaming. A
lucid dreamer that is dreaming with a
high level of lucidity knows that every
thing being experienced is the creation
of the mind.
Dreaming at the lower level of lu
cidity means the dreamer isn’t fully
aware that his or her environment is a
sole creation of the mind. While dream
ing at this lower level, the dreamer is
usually unaware that his or her physi
cal body is actually asleep and in bed.
It’s often possible to learn how to
increase lucid dreaming, thereby in
creasing the capacity to affect the course
of the dream events as they unfold.
However, lucid dreaming isn’t the same
as dream control.
People can learn how to interpret
their dreams by thinking about what
each dream element means or reminds
them of, by looking for parallels be
tween these associations and what is
happening in their waking life and by
being patient and persistent.
One suggestion that can be helpful
is to keep a dream diary and reflect on
many dreams over a long period of time
to get the truest picture of their unique
dream life.
Traxler disproves of Freud’s the
ory saying, “All dreams represent wish
ful fulfillment. Dreams reflect the kinds
of things we’re thinking about when
we are conscious.”
