Swim teams gear up for Clemson
by Maneshka Eliatamby
The Gamecock
After their excellent performance Saturday
against Cal-Berkeley, the Gamecock swim team
is getting ready to take on the Clemson Tigers
this weekend.
Both the men and women from USC will
be seen in competition at this meet, and this
is only the third meet that the men are par
ticipating in this season.
The intense rivalry between Clemson and
USC doesn’t stop at football. It plays a ma
jor role on all other sports including swim
ming.
This was apparent last weekend when a few
athletes from Clemson were spotted at the
competition between Cal-Berkeley and USC
at the Carolina Natatorium. It was quite ob
vious that they were there to check out the
competition they are going to face on Satur
day.
The performance by the Gamecock women
Saturday was definitely a morale booster, and
this will help the Gamecocks in their quest
against the Tigers.
After last weekend’s performance, the
Gamecocks seem poised to do well against the
Tigers. The competition promises to be a great
show of talent, and the rivalry between the
two schools should make this competition even
greater than usual.
Over the past few days, the Gamecock swim
team has worked relentlessly and have been
put through some rather grueling training ses
sions in anticipation of the upcoming meet.
Sarah Doyle, Tricia Rye, Megan Johnson
and Lucia Jimenez are some of the Gamecock
women to watch out for this weekend. Doyle,
a returning All-American, has been off to a
good season, and Rye, who swam her person
al best time last weekend, is confident she
will do well as she goes into Saturday’s com
petition.
For the Gamecock men, Cory Conway and
Julio Aparecido are those to look out for.
The Tigers come into the competition af
ter being defeated by Virginia in their last
meet. In the men’s competition, the Cavaliers
defeated Clemson 156-87, and the women’s
team lost 150-93.
The Gamecocks will face competition in
the men’s and women’s medley relays which
the Tigers won easily last weekend.
Mandy Commons, Elise Thieler, Kate Walk
er and Jenna Burtch might pose some compe
tition for the Gamecock women, while Matt
Norman and Will Rodgers will be the ones
to watch out for on the Clemson men’s team.
There is a rumor that the athletes whe com
peted at the Summer Olympics in Sydney, Aus
tralia this year will also be seen in competi
tion for the Gamecocks this weekend, but this
has not yet been confirmed by the athletic de
partment.

doubtedly be a sports fan, so all
you have to do is pick their team’s
rivals, i.e., Lakers-Celtics, Cow
boys-49ers. Cubs-White Sox, etc.
Being able to get on your boss’s
case for something completely
un-work-related is great.
Next are the color wheels:
People who pick teams based
on color; i.e., Packers, Eagles,
Oregon Ducks. Very superficial
method. These people eventual
ly get into office football pools
and do very well, for some rea
son.
The proximity players: Peo
ple who grew up ‘around’ a par
ticular team, although that could
mean like 400 miles away if you
were in the Southeast before Char
lotte blew up. These hometown
fans are very loyal.
The stargazers: Fans who fall
* in love with one player on a
certain team at one point in their
lives and decide to always go for
that team. In the late 1980s, every
girl I went to school with liked
the 49ers because of Joe Mon
tana.
The opportunists: Fans who
always go for the winners in any
era. The Cowboys, Bulls and
Braves in the 1990s, the Packers
in the ‘60s, the Lakers in the ‘80s.
These people are always happy
every year, because they’re al
, ways on the winning side. In
nocuous people.
The cynics: The arch-oppor
tunists. These people will say they '
liked a club before they actually
started winning, and then lost in
terest in them because they got
“big heads” or some other pathetic
excuse. There are millions of these
out there, particularly for the
Braves, Lakers, Broncos and
Cowboys. Don’t buy used cars
from these people.
Whatever type of logic we use
to pick teams, we stick with it.
One thing you can always count
on from sports fans is pre
dictability.
Not so different from elec
tions after all, is it?

been game-winners. Asorey has
been a playmaker in the midfield,
sharing the team lead in assists
with Romero.
In the goal for the Golden Pan
thers will be either junior
Franklyn Rubio or junior Wally
Crittenden. The tandem has split
time in net this season for FIU.
The Gamecocks will look to
wards their explosive forward pair
of Jordan Quinn and Ryan Daley
to expose the FIU defense.
Quinn has developed into
USC’s top scoring threat this sea
son, scoring 12 goals and adding
six assists for 30 points. The
sophomore also has three game
winners.
Daley, a freshman from
Modesto, Calif., has comple
mented Quinn well. He has eight
goals on the season to go with
four assists.
Redshirt senior goalkeeper
and Gamecock co-captain Henry
Ring will try to shut down
Romero and the rest of the FIU
attack. Ring has been exception
al for USC all season, winning 11
games with five shutouts.
Sunday’s game is the final
scheduled home game for Ring
and defender Chris Lockwood,
who is also a senior. But with a
win over FIU, it might nol be the
last. The Gamecocks could be
awarded a home game in the
NCAA Tournament. The brack
ets will be released Monday.
