Hopelights remembers
sexual assault victims
H SHARE peer educators are spon
soring a fundraising campaign and com
munity service called Hopelights, a pro
ject designed to raise sexual assault
awareness and provide support for sur
vivors.
SHARE, and ancronym for Sexual
Health Awareness and Rape Education,
is an assembly of peers within the Of
fice of Sexual Health and Violence Pre
vention.
With the help of student organi
zations, SHARE will support survivors
of sexual assault through the sale of
white ribbons and electric candle lamps,
said Hopelights coordinator Helen Teck
lenbuig.
- All proceeds from the sale benefit
the Rape Crisis Network/Sexual Trau
ma Services, a Midlands agency pro
viding hospital accompaniment, a 24
hour help line and individual and group
counseling for survivors of sexual as
sault.
Ribbons will be available for $1 each
and candle lamps for $5 starting Thurs
day and continuing through Friday in
front of the Russell House on Greene
Street.
Tecklenburg encouraged all students
who purchase candle lamps to light
them on in the windows of their rooms
Thursday at 7 p.m.
“This [the lights of the candle
lamps] is to show that USC is a com
i-;
munity of non-violence, and also to
support survivors of sexual assault,”
she said.
Following the lighting of the lamps,
a candlelight vigil will take place in
front of Sims residence hall. The cer
emony will feature speaker Juliette
Muellner, a former USC student and
survivor who works with Sexual Trau
ma Services.
Tecklenbuig said that while SHARE
does most of the work in supplying the
ribbons and lamps, student organiza
tions are responsible for their distrib
ution and the collection of donations.
Organizations active in the process
include Sociology Graduate Students
organization, McCUntock Hall Gov
ernment, Carolina Student Judicial
Council, Residence Hall Advisers from
the Women’s Leadership Association,
and Omega Phi Alpha.
Those interested in offering sup
port should visit the table on Greene
Street on Thursday and Friday between
11 a.m. and 3 p.m. to purchase a rib
bon or candle lamp.
In addition to Hopelights, Teck
Ienburg said SHARE holds workshops
on campus focusing on sexual assault
and relationship violence.
