of South Carolina’s own Hootie and the
Blowfish. Others insist it leans more to
ward that of Five Way Friday, but after
their opening performance for Sourwood
Honey Friday night at the Elbow Room,
some might say Weekend Excursion has
cultivated a musical style all their own.
“We all have different influences.
Everybody has their one type of music
that they enjoy more than another per
son in the band does. That helps run off
our sound, so there’s a lot of different
types of music that we try to pull from
when we’re on stage,” Groch says about
their sound.
All of those influences come togeth
er in the song writing process, Edmunds
said.
“Once a song’s brought to the band
we kind of mold it.' Usually what they
have in their mind is a melody, and we
take it and go places.”
Though Edmunds and Foxworth have
written the majority of Weekend Ex
cursion’s songs, die other members aren’t
left out of the process. It lias become a
joint effort, as Fisher points out.
“When we write now, we’re writ
ing together as a unit. The songs that are
coming out now represent what we’re
doing and who we are.”
Donovan adds,"Yeah, it’s a collabo
ration.”
Because of their friendship, Weekend
Excursion has created a family atmos
phere that is just as apparent on stage
as it is in their song writing process.
“We have fights, we have disagree
ments. Everybody does. We’re just like
a family,” Fisher said. “But one thing
people can take from our shows is the
energy we have. We have a lot of fun
on stage.”
Many who went to the Elbow Room
Friday night would agree.
Most of the songs they performed
appear on Weekend Excursion’s latest
full-lengdi EP, Radioactive.
They did play a few from their ear
lier releases, including “Moving On.”
Most members of the audience joined
in, singing along, all but drowning out
Fisher’s voice in the process.
Though their influences and taste in
music might vary, one thing seems to
hold true for all Weekend Excursion’s
members: they enjoy what they’re do
ing.
“I’d like for this to be the last job I
ever have,” Donovan said.
Ferry has hope for the band’s future.
“We want to make sure we accom
plish as much as we possibliy can once
we get to the top—if we get to the top.
If we don’t get to the top, then we sure
had a hell of a great time trying to reach
it.”
“The key is being patient,” Foxworth
said. “You can’t try to rush things too
fast.”

shows can be found on the band’s Web

The Gamecock
Sunny Day Real Estate was formed
in 1992 by Jeremy Enigk (vocals/guitar),
Dan Hoemer (guitar), Nate Mendel (bass)
and William Goldsmith (drums). They
met underground fame with two self-re
leased CD singles and 1994 full-length
“Diary,” put out by Sub Pop. “Diary,” re
mains to this day one of the most influ
ential albums in the underground.
The single, “Seven,” received a good
deal of airplay on MTV’s 120 Minutes.
However, this fame was short-lived when
the band broke up only seven months af
ter “Diary” hit the shelves. Various rea
sons sparked the break-up, namely Enigk’s
new-found Christianity. Sub Pop, how
ever, did release their posthumos second
album, “Sunny Day Real Estate” (also af
fectionately called “The Pink Album” by
fans), in 1995. Even in their absence,
SDRE maintained a large and fast-grow
ing fan base despite the small number
of live shows and the band’s refusal to do
interviews.
During this separation, bassist Mendel
and drummer Goldsmith joined Dave
” Grohl’s new band, The Foo Fighters-Enigk
recorded a solo album, “Return of the
Frog Queen.”
The band set aside their differences
and reunited in 1998 after a successful
show reunion, with the exception of
Mendel who chose to stay with the Foo
Fighters. SDRE recorded its third album
“How It Feels to be Something On,”
shortly after the (eunion.
SDRE is still touring and have re
cently released their fourth album “The
Rising Tide” in June after switching from
Sub Pop to Time Bomb.
Sunny Day Real Estate recently
played a show at the Elbow Room.
The band took the stage at. 10 p.m.
and proceeded to chaige through an hour
and a half set, beginning with an updat
ed version of the waltzing “Pheurton
Skeurto,” an older song from their first
album, “Diary.” The set-list included re
cent hits and old favorites, including a
number of songs they hadn’t played in
years.
Enigk drew most of the attention,
with his voice effortlessly turning from
soft and cherubic to harsh and howling—
the voice of an infant demon. Enigk al
temately swayed and crooned and bel
lowed; he cradled his guitar with his eyes
shut as if he wanted to rock it to sleep.
Goldsmith and Hoemer were con
tent to settle into the background, an
nealing the riffs and breaks.
The band was inexhaustible, wear
ing their naked brilliance like an ele
gant wedding ring, a welcome change
from the red badges and rock bombast so
often touted.
Upon the close, the crowd drew it
self together and screamed its applause
relentlessly until the band returned for
an encore consisting partly of the first
and last song the band has released: “Sev
en” and “The Rising Tide,” respectively.
After the show, the core members of
Sunny Day Real Estate met and talked
with a loose battalion of fans, outside in
the cold air. They were cordial and gra
cious, taking the time to talk about past
and future projects, signing various items.
The show could not have been more of
a success.
