Cold’s newest album sizzles

Cold has followed up the 1999
release of their self-titled album
with one of equally dark, nihilis
tic proportions.
These 13 tracks, shaded with
varying tempos and fiercely intense melodies, show the ex
tent of this Jacksonville, Florida-based group’s talents.
“13 Ways to Bleed on Stage” contains an untamed, raw
emotion, balanced gracefully with flowing basslines and
pounding beats. Were frontmen Gavin Rossdale of Bush
and Stain’s Aaron Lewis to have a child, Cold’s totally bent
vocalist, Scoot Ward, would undoubtedly be the result.
The vocals in the CD’s opening track, “Just Got Wicked,”
might actually be mistaken for Rossdale’s if it weren’t for
one line in which Ward screams out the song title.
The same could be said for “She Said,” “It’s All Good”
and “Same Drug.”
Most of the songs have kept their dark, angst-filled edge,
and though the CD kicks things off with engaging guitar
licks and lyrics, it gets progressively quiet, closing up with
“Bleed.”
The softer sounds of “No One,” “Sick of Man” and
“Witch” display Cold’s members’ individual talents glori
ously.
From these borderline acoustic sounds to head-hitting,
heart-pounding, adrenaline-filled tracks like “End of the
World” and “Send In the Clowns,” “ 13 Ways to Bleed on
Stage” has it all.
For those who enjoyed Cold’s self-titled debut album,
you ain’t heard nothing yet.

Week gives students opportunity
to relive ‘80s with movies, music
by Mackenzie Craven
The Gamecock
What elements come to mind when thinking
of the ‘80s? People often remember a decade of
big hair, tie dye and jean jackets. But the ‘80s were
also an age of classic movies and a distinct style
of music.
“‘80s Week,” sponsored by Carolina Produc
tions, will give students the opportunity to relive
this time.
Superstar, an ‘80s coverband from East Coast
Entertainment in North Carolina will perform
Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. on the Russell House Pa
tio.
“The ‘80s are something we’re all fascinated
by,” said Cinematic Arts Commissioner Tug Bak
er, “even though most of us were very young.”
“They’ll come out and play eveiyone’s favorites
from the ‘80s,” he said. “I think it will be a lot of
fun and it’s a good way is get people in the spir
it.”
“We had been talking about having an ‘80s cov
er band come here, and I found this group,” Per
forming Arts Commissioner Krista Wingard said.
' “I think it will be a really good time. I hope a
lot of people come out,” she said.
At 8 p.m. Wednesday, the ‘80s-themed movie,
“Grosse Point Blank,” will be shown in the Rus
sell House Theater.
“Although it wasn’t made in the 1980s, it is in
spired by the ‘80s. It’s about a guy who goes back
to his high school for a 10-year reunion. It has a lot
of references in the ‘80s and music that people will
recognize,” Baker said.
Thursday night, lecturer Barry Drake will pre
sent Rock Music in the Video Age in the Russel!
House Theater. According to Baker, Drake travels
to college campuses across the country to lecture
about the ‘80s. Baker said Drake’s presentation is
entertaining and includes a multi-media show fea
turing clips of videos mid music.
“This is stuff you don’t get to see anymore. It’s
good stuff and should bring back memories,” Bak
er said. “Everyone likes ‘80s movies and music, no
matter how bad it was.”
“I used to watch some of those movies over
and over, like “Back to the Future.” Now we’re
seeing that stuff back on TV again on TNT. TRS,
USA. People like those movies; they are classics,”
he said.
Business junior Cheryl Benner says she plans
to see the ‘80s band play Wednesday.
“I love ‘80s music,” Benner said. “I used to lis
ten to that stuff when I was younger, and I still like
it now.”
