Uni ©amecocR ‘Twelth Night’ in Columbia by Kamille Bostick The Gamecock Theatre South Carolina is off to a great start with its 2000-2001 lineup. The production of Shakespeare’s “Twelfth Night” exhibits the vision and quality that has come to be ex pected by those who are familiar with past shows. “Twelfth Night” is the zany com edy of a twin brother and sister sepa rated in a shipwreck. The story is mixed with a romance that could not have been made possible by any playwright other than William Shakespeare. It is one of his most popular plays, a light hearted and musical work filled with mistaken identities, conflicts, decep tion, courting and ultimately, a happy j ending. Theatre South Carolina’s produc L tion of this comedy of hearts is set in the early 19th century, but everything else about this beloved and highly com plicated comedic romance is left in tact. From the jokes to the gestures, the fights to the embraces, the begin ning to the end, the production fulfills every expectation and brings good hu mor to life. Daniel Levy’s musical score, along with the abilities of the actors and ac tresses, as well as the accompaniment of Tamra Stephens, provides lyrical hu mor to a production already full of laughs. The designs of Nicole Bartet add dimension and decor to Shakespeare’s classic through the vivid colors and wonderfully appropriate wardrobes and costumes worn by the cast. The production, under the direc tion of Eleanor Holdridge, a resident director with New York’s New Drama tists who has staged this play twice in the past five years, certainly does justice to Shakespeare’s comedy, creatively combing neoclassical and romantic concepts. All the elements of lighting, staging, set and direction create a spectacle worthy of opening a season and one that promises to con tinue delivering great theatre. Brilliant performances and inter pretations fill the show with the com edy and stellar acting that best becomes Shakespeare. Theatre South Carolina’s “Twelfth Night” delivers. The pro duction is truly entertaining and amus ing, just as the great bard intended when he wrote the script nearly 400 years ago for anyone seeking a few laughs and an interesting story. The cast uses its skill and direction to exploit the outrageous behavior of the characters and the humor of the situations. With levels of experience as varied as the characters in Shake speare’s play, LaShawn Banks (Orsi no), Nathan Thten (Sebastian), and Er ic Abrams (Sir Toby Belch) combine with Stephen Cone (Sir Andrew Aguecheek), Ben Fitch (Malvolio), Darin A.J. Dahms (Feste), Leslie Anderson (Olivia), Alicia Atkins (Vi ola), Chad Williams (Fabian), Terry Donovan Smith (Antonio), and others to create a show worth seeing. Theatre South Carolina will con tinue its season with “Look Home ward, Angel,’’which will be performed Nov. 10-19. “Twelfth Night” is being performed at Drayton Hall through Saturday. Jesse Smith shot the video. Smith has shot videos for artists like Snoop Dogg, DMX, Mos Def and Avant. All the members of RAM-Z have lives rooted in music. “As far back as I can remember I’ve been doing some form of enter tainment,” Adams said. “I ventured into singing when I was eight years old. Both sides of my family are mu sical. My mother’s side all plays in struments and my father’s side sings.” Smith didn’t start seriously singing until 1992. Although he liked to sing when he was young, he didn’t get serious about it until later in his life. “I was a late bloomer. I didn’t start singing until about a year before I met Zach and Robert,” Smith said. Lee, a former choirboy, has been singing all his life. “I come from a musical back ground. My father was a minister and I was in the choir at church,” Lee said. “Music was a getaway for my family. We came from humble back grounds, so music was really an out let for us.” “I used to be really serious about sports, but I broke my wrist in high school and realized I couldn’t play any more. After that, I got very serious about music,” Lee said. Adams explained that church was a big influence on RAM-Z. “We are all grounded in church. Rob’s dad and my dad are Baptist preachers, so that’s been a big influ ence,” Adams said. RAM-Z’s debut album includes some big names. The group worked with Ruff Riders, Drag-On, Prestige from Bad Boys, Jack Knife and Pub lic Announcement on their album. RAM-Z left Columbia for anothe show in Charleston. Their nationwide tour covers many cities, including Philadelphia, Atlanta, Washington D.C. and Baltimore. As RAM-Z continues their tour, crowds continue to be pleased with the shows. All the band’s shows are lively. Audacious stage shows are one of their best known strengths. As RAM-Z continues to break into the mainstream R&B scene, they still try to change it with their own kind of originality and authenticity. Two future stars are Ryan Hurst, who plays team cap tain Geny Bertier, and Wood Harris, who plays Bertier’s com rade Julius Campbell. The relationship shared between these two teammates is capable of making the men in the theater cry more than the women, as their interactions are reminis cent of the depiction of Gayle Sayers and Brian Piccolo in “Brian’s Song.” Overrated acting it is not. Perhaps “Remember the Ti tans” could have been another “Mighty Ducks” if the act ing were less solid and heart-wrenching. Hurst, from “Sav ing Private Ryan,” and Harris, from “Above the Rim,” provide a true representation of tough love, discipline and the team’s chemistry. Another pair of notable actors are Kip Pardue, who plays the Gamecocks’ one-time quarterback Ronnie Bass, I and Donald Faison, from “Clueless.” The film opened with “I Heard it Through the Grapevine,” which screamed of a fluffy, glossy Mickey Mouse and com pany movie, but later music surprisingly balanced the scenes well, with Cat Stevens’ “Peace Train” and James Taylor’s “Fire and Rain.” The Temptations’ “Ain’t Too Proud to Beg” serves for a fine moment of male bonding and “Na Na Hey Hey Kiss Him Goodbye” proves to have a momentous mean ing by the film’s end. The football scenes were detailed and rejuvenating, with the spirit flowing through the theater like the tensions that flowed through the players at the film’s beginning. “Remember the Titans,” one of the first memorable films of the year, will provide enough word-of-mouth during these few months, the season for S.C. football, to rake in Carolina cash and main tain its spot at the top of the box office charts.
