Men vie for title of Mr. Legs

Picture 12 guys showing off their legs, strutting and
swaggering before a cheering crowd.
USC Student Government President Jokata Eaddy host
ed the first annual Mr. Legs competition, which took place
during Homecoming Kickoff at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday on Greene
Street in front of the Russell House. Only 10 of the initial
19 contestants showed up, but two extras were able to fill
in as contestants.
The idea of the contest came from former student Travis
Ackers, who submitted the idea to Homecoming Com
missioner Jo Smith and Carnival/Kickoff Chairman Hy
drick Harden.
The guys only had a few seconds to impress the
judges and the crowd. According to Harden, the contes
tants were evaluated on not only the “general physique
of their legs, but also on their attitude and spirit, and cre
ativity.”
Though some seemed unprepared, contestants prepared
! dance routines or stripteases. Pink roses and Hawaiian neck
I laces were given to the judges while Pharmacy sophomore
; Chuck Lansing, dressed in a baby blue towel robe, threw
J candy to the crowd and started to put cream on his legs be
; fore asking for a little crowd participation.
Some of the guys were dressed as girls, including
; business freshman Blaine Benthall, a Kappa Sigma frater
nity member, who donned a leopard-print dress and wore
high heel sandals. Others stripped, creating frenzy among
the masses. Management Science sophomore Marc Meha
gan from Pi Kappa Phi took off his trousers to reveal red
and black painted legs, and then removed his Afro wig and
shirt as he writhed like a snake.
“I worked on all my self confidence and after a while
I looked at my legs in the mirror for a mighty long time,
and I just realized that, well, no one can compare to me,”
Mehagan said when asked how he managed to gather the
courage to perform.
The contestants, of course, had to have self-confidence
as they were asked, beforehand, to write a paragraph about
why they deserved to win.
Eaddy read parts of the essays to the crowd as she
presented the contestants. Most of the men said they played
! soccer or another sport and they deserved to win. '
Some put a little more thought into why they had the
best legs. Tanzanian-bom Faiyaz Dossaji, member of Pi Kap
, pa Phi and international studies junior, said his legs “were
tanned 365 days a year. Indian guys never get credit for
' their bodies, so why not me?” Dossaji said.
“A three-page essay was submitted by Mike Scott on
behalf of Rob Goodwin, the second contestant,” Harden
said. “It was a very funny, satirical essay dealing with the
El Salvadorian Liberation Movement and the Allendes....”
After the parade, the band Hipbone played for about
90 minutes, after which the winner was announced. Mr.
Legs was Roy San Pedro, a Pi Kappa Alpha member who
dressed as a hula dancer for the competition. San Pedro was
awarded his title at Wednesday’s Jamfest and didn’t give a
speech upon acceptance of the award, Smith said.
Most contestants didn’t care about winning.
“I thought it’d be fun, it’d be different and it was,” con
testant Chuck Lansing said. “I’d be happy to win, but I did
it for fun.”

Musgrave said that Dane Cook, a
comedian originally from Boston, will
.also perform a stand-up comedy rou
tine. “He’s been on Comedy Central
and on Letterman, said Musgrave. He
does a good show.”
Freshman Franklyn Rainsford said,
‘Tin not in a fraternity, but I’ll be go
ing to Cockfest with my friends. I think
the pep rally will be more spirited this
year than it has been. USC students
have shown so much school spirit that
it kind of puts me into that kind of
mood, too.”
According to Musgrave, the event
win serve as a culmination oi me
Homecoming events. At the end of
show, Kelly and Cook will announce
the winners of Half-Time, the Parade,
Cockfest, and finally, the overall win
ners.

tunity to make it more dynamic, a
more unique animal,” Ottman said.
Ottman is aware that “Scream 2”
takes place in a film school as well,
but he said the ability to contrast the
two is easy.
“There is a huge difference be
tween the two films,” he said. “The
‘Scream’ movie is more of a farce,
making fun of itself.”
Ottman made “Urban Legends II:
Final Cut” to be taken more serious
ly than a film focused on quick jokes
and a formula for teen horror flicks.
An accomplished score compos
er, Ottman is familiar with the intri
cacies of a project. As Ottman’s di
rectorial debut, “Final Cut” paves the
way to a future in filmmaking.
“I had a lot of freedom with the
movie, though I had to make painful
cuts I didn’t necessarily want to make
... I would walk away wondering if I
could make it better,” he said.
About the behind-the-scenes fun,
Ottman said it was mostly relaxing.
“The most endearing thing about mak
ing a film is forming a family,” Ottman
said.
He said it was hard to say goodbye
on the last day of filming, but Ottman
enjoyed the close bond shared among
the cast members and the growth the
cast experienced.
