iChe (Bamecock V HHHf Jamfest to showcase dance by Kelly Hamilton The Gamecock * Jamfest, the Homecoming event where students can dis play their dance talent as they compete for points, will take place at 7 p.m. today in the Russell House ballroom. Three dance categories will be presented: line dance, step dance, and freestyle. For the line dance division, four groups will be in compe tition: Tri Delta with Kappa Sigma, Kappa Delta with Sigma Chi, Chi Omega with Tau Kappa Epsilon, and Sigma Nu with ZetaTau Epsilon. In the step dance category, two groups will compete: Al pha Phi Omega will take on Lambda Chi Alpha with Delta Gam ma. Four groups will challenge each other in the freestyle com petition: Alpha Chi Omega with Delta Upsilon, Kappa Kappa Gamma with Delta Upsilon, Pi Kappa Alpha with Delta Zeta, and the Baptist Student Union. “There is a lot of variety in the types of dances that the groups are doing,” said co-advisor Nithya Bala. “Some of the dances are traditional Southern dances, but others are not, so we have some diversity.” ® “We had a large number of organizations, so we had to hold auditions to decide who would be in it.” Bala said the ballroom has been open all week in order for the groups to practice their routines. “It’s obvious that the groups participating in this have put a lot of hard work into their dances,” she said. The judging is based on crowd appeal, accuracy, creativi ty, and appearance, according to Bala. The winners will each be given a plaque, as well as points toward their respective groups’ Homecoming totals. The juclges are Miss Greater Irmo 2000, Holly Neese; Su sitii E. Anderson, artistic director of the USC Dance Company; Maggie Bostic, owner of Jazz African Aerobic Studio; and Gi na Tepara, an Indian classical dancer. In addition to the competition, the audience will see pre sentations by the West African Drumming and Dance Ensem ble, the USC School of Dance, and Dance Marathon. Advisor Mike Duncan from Carolina Productions said rep resentatives from Dance Marathon will present an exhibition of line dancing. Junior Caroline Baroody from the Dance Marathon Committee said Dance Marathon committee mem bers will be line dancipg to Shania Twain’s ‘I Feel Like a Wbman. ’ “We want everyone to see what Dance Marathon is all about. It’s firn, and we hope a lot of people will get involved. At Dance Marathon, we’ll be teaching a new line dance,” Baroody said. Kelly Rhodes of Alpha Chi Omega has been teaching a freestyle dance to members of her sorority and to the members of Delta Upsilon. “It wasn’t too hard to coordinate the dance routine. Most of the girls were cheerleaders, and we had some pretty talent ed guys. They picked up the routine pretty fast,” Rhodes said. “We’re doing this freestyle dance to a DMX song, and we’ve been practicing a lot.” Sophomore Jessica Decker, the special events chair for Kap pa Kappa Gamma, said, “We’ve been practicing our freestyle dance every night for the past two weeks, so we are pretty con fident.” Jamfest gives people who usually don’t dance a chance to try. “I have no rhythm whatsoever, but I’ll be out there danc ing and having fun,” said senior Mike Scott, Delta Upsilon’s homecoming chair. Wylde . from page 7 guitar-driven, no bullsh*t music.” The band has taken this straight-ahead approach on the raid, and despite wliat mainstream music tendencies are, has garnered a lot • of support. “We started about 3 1/2-4 months ago and we hit Japan, the States, Europe, came back over here and we’re going up to Canada,” Wylde said. According to Wylde, on this tour and the last one, the band was able to put on a good show because the entire metal community would attend their shows. However, Black Label Society still remains in the underground music scene, and despite the quality or their record ings, are not fully embraced by the mu sic community. But Wylde doesn’t let the lack of success keep him from enjoying the experience of making a record. “If you’re doing what you love, it’s not a job,” Wylde said. “As long as I can keep a roof over my family’s head, and the refrigerator full of beer, I’m good to go.” And at least for. now, it seems Wylde will have no problems making a career for himself. In addition to being in a movie coming out titled “Metal God” and star ring Mark Walhbeig and Jennifer Anis ton, Wylde is going to continue to be busy with Black Label Society. “We’re going out for some dates with tlie Panteraguys in like November,” Wylde said. “I think they’re also going to bring out Kittie and Morbid Angel so we’ll see what happens. Also don’t be surprised if Wylde and Ozzy Osbourne join back together in the near future. “I saw Ozzy at the Ozzfest and we’re talking about doing some tours again,” Wylde said. “[I might] be doing another record or whatever [with Ozzy] so we’ll see what happens.” ' As for now, Wylde plans on contin uing to impress audiences on the Pen chant for Violence tour. Black Label Society, Crowbar and Sixty Witt Shaman will perform Thurs day at Spartanbuig’s Ground Zero. Doors open at 8pm, the show starts at 9pm, and tickets are $15.
