rabble rouser in us.”
The Golden Spur opened as a begr
and wine bar in 1973. It was well re
ceived among the students and re
mained popular throughout its exis
tence. The Golden Spur offered
students a safe, relaxed environment
to enjoy a cold beer.
Because the legal drinking age at
the time was 18, underage drinking was
not a problem.
Brewer said, “If the students want
ed to get rowdy, they weren’t going to
do it on campus. You lose a lot more.
If you go down to Five Points, go to a
bar and get in trouble, the worst that
can happen is you go to the magistrate
and pay a fine. [If] you’re on campus,
you can get kicked out of school.”
In the late ‘70s, the addition of new
bars and nightclubs helped develop the
popularity of Five Points as the uni
versity’s premiere nightspot, thus mark
ing the decline of The Golden Spur.
“It made absolutely no sense to
have a situation that was not financially
solvent,” Brewer said.
President Reagan’s decree to the
states to raise the drinking age to 21
seemed to have nailed the coffin shut
on the Russell House’s first bar.
USC’s student union remains to
this day without a bar. The Golden
Spur is sometimes used by Carplina
Productions for small events, although
nothing is currently booked for fall
2000. With state-imposed drinking age
laws and university policies regard
ing the possession of alcoholic bever
ages on campus, it doesn’t appear USC
will have an on-campus bar anytime
soon.
“I don’t think the students of the
University of South Carolina need any
help finding a place to get a drink,”
Brewer said.
Yet the student union has a void to
fill.
Leventis said, “It’s ridiculous not
to have a place for students to hang out
on campus.” •
^Business junior Drew Burton
says an on-campus bar could help bring
a sense of unity to USC’s social scene.
“It would be nice, too, after a win
against someone as strong as Georgia,
to come back to campus and be able to
celebrate with all the students. The
whole school would come back - in
one place - and everybody would cel
ebrate together.”

'‘Say My Name,” also kept up with an
other trend — leather — as the three
women wore similar but not matching
studded black leather outfits.
Best hip-hop video award winner
Sisqo wore a studded red leather outfit
during his onstage performance. Black
leather was the fashion choice for the
majority of ’N Sync, which won three
awards for the “Bye Bye Bye” video.
Professional wrestling star Chyna
wrapped herself in what looked like a
leather flag.
A handful of stars stuck to more tra
ditional award-show fashions, including
Toni Braxton in a tuxedo (although she.
was missing the shirt). Moby and two
of the Red Hot Chili Peppers wore
monochromatic suits, shirts and ties,
sporting the look made popular by “Who
Wints to Be a Millionaire” host Regis
Philbin.
Eminem went the opposite route,
wearing a series of baggy athletic
ptuiis and plain white T-shirts.
“People used to try to do fashion at
these awards, but now they make grunge
look good, ” Ginsberg said.

over $800 for Palmetto Richland Hospital.
The second night of rush they discussed their so
cial activities and what they did during the year be
sides service activities. They have two events planned
for this year. The first is Candlelight Formal, on Nov.
18. The candle crest is the symbol of their sorority.
The six candles on the crest represent God, Coun
try, Home, Cause, Fellowship and Work. Their
colors are blue, which represents fidelity, and gold,
which symbolizes achievement. The spring event
is called the Spring Butterfly Ball, which this year
will represent diversity.
On the third night, the sisters told the new mem
bers about the ways and means, dues, meetings, pledge
training and about how they raise money for
themselves. After sisters are accepted, they re
ceive a personal invitation to the first meeting ac
companied with a flower.
According to Tyndall, “One small change can
make a large impact give a lot of good and support
in what we do.”
