USC defense intercepts five Carter passes, shuts down Bulldogs

The Gamecock
Once again, the goalposts came
down in Columbia.
A week after defeating New Mex
ico State and ending the longest ac
tive losing streak in the nation, South
Carolina’s football team upset No. 9
Georgia 21-10 Saturday in front.of
the second-largest crowd in school
history.
Derek Watson’s three touchdowns
led the way for the Gamecocks (2-0,
1-0 SEC), who through two games
this season have already won more
games than the last two seasons com
bined. The win also ended the Game
cocks’ 18-game SEC losing skid.
The Bulldogs (1-1,0-1 SEC), who
had the best offense in the SEC last
year, struggled against a swarming
Carolina defense that intercepted
quarterback and Heisman trophy can
didate Quincy Carter five times. Geor
gia finished the game with only
202 total yards offensively, less than
half of what they averaged per game
in 1999.
“It was just a team effort,” USC
head coach Lou Holtz said. “I’m very
proud of this football team. We re
ally believed we could win before
the game.”
The first series of the game left
no indication, however, that it would
be South Carolina’s day.
Carter moved the Bulldog offense
down the field with relative ease on
its first posession, and Brett Milli
can capped it off with a 5-yard touch
down run that put Georgia up 7-0,
momentarily quieting the capacity
crowd of 83,605.
On the ensuing kick off, how
ever, Watson took over. He put the
Gamecocks in Bulldog territory with
a 53-yard kickoff return and followed

Carter’s Heisman hopes
at risk after rough game
by Kyle Almond
The Gamecock
Quincy Carter was seeing red on
Saturday - and it wasn't just the Game
cocks’ new jerseys.
The Heisman candidate was hum
bled on Saturday by a South Caroli
na defense that intercepted five of his
passes and limited him to 108 yards
passing on just 10 completions.
To get a good idea of how special
the USC defense was in the Game
cocks’ 21-10 upset victory of No. 9
Georgia, Carter only threw six inter
ceptions all of last season. Before the
game, he had only thrown 16 inter
ceptions in his entire Georgia career.
It’s pretty safe to say that Carter’s
Heisman campaign took a serious
blow at Williams-Brice Stadium.
“It’s over with," Carter said after
the loss. “I have to take it like a
man and step up for next week.”
The junior quarterback started the
game well, leading the Bulldogs to a
touchdown on their opening pos
session, but things quickly went down
hill after that.
Andre Goodman picked him off
on the second Georgia possession and
returned the ball 70 yards all the way
to the Bulldog 7-yard line. It led to
the second USC touchdown of the
day, and gave them a 14-7 lead.
In the second half the Gamecocks
went on to intercept four more Cartel
passes.
Defensive end Dennis Quinn had
two of the picks while safety Rashad
Faison and cornerback Sheldon
Brown had one each.
Brown was surprised that Carter
had such a poor day.
"That shocked me." Brown said.
"Especially because he is a Heisman
candidate. Some of the passes he
threw, they were not quality passes.”
Defensive coordinator Charlie
Strong was pleased with the way
his team followed the game plan.
“We just wanted to be patient and
not give up the big play," he said.
"They are a team that beats you on
the big play, the ‘home run’.
“We wanted to blitz and cover the
receivers." Strong said. "We felt that
our DBs could run with them.”
The defensive backs did more
than run with the Georgia receivers.
They dominated them. The Game
cocks limited Georgia playmaker Ter
rence Edwards to only live catches
for 49 yards. Only three other re
ceivers caught a pass.
"We made things happen on de
fense,” South Carolina head coach
Lou Holtz said. "I thought our de
fense was excellent. I think we con
fused [Carter| some."
So far this season, the Gamecocks’
3-3-5 defensive alignment has been
effective. Last week USC shut out
New Mexico State and picked off two
passes.
This week, against the best of
fense in the SEC last season, they on
ly allowed 10 points and picked oft
five passes. With seven interceptions
