actor admits he had “no idea” what he was
going to do.
'ii was supposed to be a seven-to-10
minute spot, andl ended up performing
for an hour and a half. I loved it, and I’ve
been doing comedy ever since,” Frates said.
Frates said he prefers improv to oth
er types of comedy that he’s done. “I’ve
always been someone with a quick recall,”
he said. “You need to think fast, because
you don’t know that the audience will say
and how they will react.”
Co-owner and actor Paul D’Amato,
who also had his start in stand-up comedy,
enjoys improv in particular. “Wbrking in
an ensemble is good because you can see
when the other actors are having a hard
time and try to help them out.” Frates said.
“What’sgreat about improv is that it’s
based on trust. You’re working with oth
ers, so you learn to play to each others
strengths and weaknesses,” Frates said.
Frates said it’s important to know the
other members of the group well so you
can try to predict what they will do.
According to Frates, the shows are im
provised right on the spot, so quick think
ing, good instincts and an ability to read
the audience and fellow actors are essen
tial skills for the improvisational comedi
an. To prepare for the shows, the group has
a training center where basic techniques
and skills are taught.
Students develop acting and impro
visational skills, gain confidence, and leam
to work well in a group.
“What we do is to start with the
truth about everyday life and find some
thing fiinny in it. People start laughing what
they recognize something in themselves,”
D’Amato said.
But no matter how much practice and
rehearsing the actors do, as Frates said, “You
get out there and you never know what’s
going to happen. I Jove the thrill of it. And
even when what you’re doing doesn’t make
logical sense, if the audience is laughing,
it’s working. Then you can step back and
say, I did that... it’s a good feeling.”
