The Gamecock
The resurgent and once-again
healthy Gamecock volleyball squad
got off to a great start this weekend,
finishing second in the Carolina Clas
sic Tournament with a 3-1 record.
USC started off hot, winning their
first three matches over Liberty, Duke
and Xavier, but fell in the title match
to Texas Tech.
SeniorMandy Quarterman was an
force for the Gamecocks’ offense,
recording eight kills in the weekend’s
first match Friday and following up
with 28 more in the next two
matches. Also, two of Coach Kim
Christopher’s freshmen saw signifi
cant playing time during the tourna
ment.
USCd. Liberty, 15-2,15-4,15-9
The Gamecocks shattered a USC
hitting percentage record in their first
regular-season match, hitting .561 for
the match against the Flames. The
record, which had stood since 1986,
was paced by outstanding piay irom
freshman Mariana Branquinho, who
hit .478 in her first collegiate match.
Also, 1999 All-SEC member Berna
Dwyer hit .588 with 11 kills.
“I am very excited to see them re
lax and get the opportunity to play an
other team. We were very sharp of
fensively,” said Christopher. “We need
to work on blocking and defense.”
USC d. Duke, 15-8,15-9,15-8
Quarterman led USC to its second
victory of the day Friday, but was al
so aided by the return of sophomore
Cally Plummer.
Plummer, in her first match since
being red-shirted last season, knocked
down 13 kills with three service aces.
“Mandy Quarterman had an awe
some day. What a great day. She passed
well, terminated well, she really
stepped up and showed her senior lead
ership,” said Christopher.
USC held the Lady Blue Devils to
an anemic .088 hitting percentage in
winning their second straight match.
“I was nervous and excited all day
in class. I was just so excited to
compete again with my teammates,”
said Plummer, an All-SEC first-team
selection her freshman year. “Tonight
was everything I thought it would be.
I can’t wait to do it again.”
USC d. Xavier, 15-13, 15-1, 12-15,
15-8.
Quarterman once again sparkled
against the Musketeers, recording
15 kills. Sophomore Megan Hosp had
47 assists at the setter position.
“It was an incredible learning
experience for our program. That’s
the kind of match we needed to have.
The harder we hit, the more they dug.
We learned how to be more patient.
It was awesome,” Christopher said.
Dwyer led all hitters with 17 kills,
hitting .317, and junior Liz Price post
ed 19 digs. USC hit .246 for the match.

Although the Gamecocks hung
close to the Red Raiders Saturday, they
couldn’t quite overcome them as
the Gamecocks dropped the title match
in three straight games. Although
Plummer (14 kills) and Quarterman
(18 kills) performed admirably, the
team couldn’t quite pull together to
win the .host tournament.
Carolina tied or took the lead in
two of the three games, but Tech
was able to come up with clutch hit
ting and several key blocks to hand
USC its first loss.
The Gamecocks will travel to Ann
Aibor, Mich., on Friday to play in the
Michigan Tournament. USC will play
New Mexico and Northern Illinois
Friday before playing the host Wolver
ines on Saturday.

The strength behind the team is

Major Duncan has high hopes for

last year. Our GPA stood at 3.44,”

rey relieved Petty after his injury.
Despite throwing an interception,
Kimrey fared well, completing four ■
of seven passes for 62 yards.
Mikal Goodman and Rod Wilson
also saw time at the quarterback po
sition late in the game, but both fum
bled and saw little action afterwards.
“Once we lost Phil Petty, we
played three quarterbacks,” Holtz
said. “They all turned it over. We need
to take better care of the ball.”
On the other side, New Mexico
State starting quarterback K. C,
Enzminger had a tough time as well.
The junior, who threw for 1,878 yards
and ran for 358 yards last season,
could never get into rhythm. He was
sacked four times Saturday and was
picked off twice by USC’s defense.
