J eff Arundel’s blend of
rock is too little too late
by Erin O’Neal
The Gamecock
OUT. OF
So, here’s the million dollar
question, Regis: Is “Mood Ring” a)
a lyrical, emotional ride; b) a trib
ute to balladeers, like Neil Young;
c) a cheap, plastic piece of jewel
ry; or d) reminiscent musical resin
from the late sixties and seventies?
Need to call a friend?
While “Mood Ring” may very
well be described as all of the
above, there is no doubt singer
songwriter, Jeff Arundel, is too lit
tle too late.
His mellow blend of classic rock
rhythms and borderline folk tem
po would have been much more
appreciated during the reigning
years of John Fogerty (if there ever
were such a time).
However, in today’s predictable
world of “boy band” mania, his
artistic talents are sure to go un
noticed.
“Mood Ring” seems to salute all
the great solo artists of the past
three decades, both in lyric and
sound, from James Taylor to Paul
Simon.
The smooth, soft staple of The
Eagles resonates clearly through
out the album.
“Scared To Change,” “That
Sound,” and “Hey Ann” seem to
be most clearly influenced by the
Eagles, with the lyrics describing
a typical rocky relationship and re
lating them to the album’s over
all sound.
The only exception to this ven
eration of acoustic artists comes in
the form of “Fleetwood,” a twangy,
blues/rock homage to Eric Clap
ton, similar to those of Kenny
Wayne Shepard and Johnny Lang.
Arundel has managed to add
some much-needed color to the
overcrowded world of solo-artists
while keeping an edge on the soft
er side of acoustic rock. Kudos.
