own at the Pirates' goalkeeper. How
ever, ECU had a 1-0 victory.
The two teams go into Sunday's
contest looking for some momen
tum. The
Gamecocks are looking for some con
fidence before trough early schedule.
After N.C. State, USC will travel to
Chapel Hill and take on nationally
ranked teams North Carolina, Clem
son and Duke.
USC will be looking for its veter
an defense to keep the high powered
N.C. State offense from owning the
game. The USC defense, led by seniors
Kim Murray and Jessica Workman, will
try to keep Wolfpack threats Shannon
Tully and Laura Scott away rrom tne
goal.
Scott, who scored five goals and
assisted on four others in her freshman
campaign, is expected to be one of N.C.
State's more dangerous goal scorers.
Look for the Gamecocks to be more
of a challenge to the N.C. State offense,
which recorded 17 shots against ECU.
USC's attack will be letfby junior
Morgan McIntyre. Coming off of 16 ,
and 17 point seasons as a freshman and
sophomore, McIntyre will be looked
to for an offensive spark. Joining Mcln
trye will be freshmen Amy Caddies and
Miia-Maria Heinonen, who have ex
cited both coach Kelly and USC fans
alike with their strong play in the spring.
The Wolfpack defense, which al
lowed only three shots in its opener,
may have their hands full with the USC
scorers. Erin Bushy and. Kelly Jordan
lead an all-sophomore defense that is
rounaea out oy coieue sevme anu
Lauren Bendahan.
The two teams are moving in op
posite directions.
N.C. State is looking to rebound
from a poor 1999 campaign which they
finished with a 7-9-2 record.
The Gamecocks' goal is to keep
building upon last season's success in
which they recorded program highs in
both SEC and overall wins. With a loss
against N.C. State, and national pow
ers North Carolina, Clemson and Duke
looming, USC could quickly see '
their record drop to 0-5. That won’t be
an easy hole, to climb out of and a far
cry from last season, in which the
Gamecocks won nine of their first
eleven games.

could see no reason why we can’t win
the national championship. Today my
objectives and feelings are the same."
The team will have 53 lettermen
returning which includes 15 starters
(7 offense, 8 defense). The focus of
the off-season this year for USC was
to improve the offense. Offensive Co
ordinator Skip Holtz implemented a
shotgun formation, different from last
years drop back passing game.
Although quarterback Phil Petty
was inconsistent last year, he now
has a year’s experience as a starter and
a slightly more experienced offensive
line. The wide receiver corps will be
led by Jermale Kelly and James Ad
kinsson.
Kelly had ten touchdowns his fresh
ly man year, but only five the past two
seasons. With Watson and Andrew Pin
nock in the backfield, the offense should
be much more stable this season.
"At practice the offense has been stun
ning," Holtz said.
This year, the defense is aspiring
to build off last years success, which
was ranked 20th in the nation.
The loss of John Abraham and Ar
turo Freeman will hurt, but it will give
an opportunity to defensive tackles Ce
cil Caldwell and Cleveland Pinkney to
step up. Outside linebacker Kalimba
Edwards was second on the team in
sacks.
Sheldon Brown will play comer as
he looks to replace the veterans Ar
turo Freeman and Ray Green in the
secondary. Alongside Brown will be
Antoine Neismith who will be taking
over the free safety spot after his con
version from tailback last season.
Rashad Faison, who was named to the
SEC all-freshman team, will play strong
safety.
The special teams are perhaps the
largest concern approaching the sea
son. New kickers Jason Corse and Ryan
Allen will be competing for the
place kicker spot. Tyeler Dean, a
redshirt sophomore, will handle the
punting.
In each of his last five coaching
jobs, Holtz has led his team to a bowl
appearance in his second year on the
job. Although that is not expected here,
it shows promise that USC should be
a better team this year. The schedule
is, as usual, one of the toughest in the
nation. Six of the Gamecocks final sev
en opponents went to a bowl last year.
