New vegetarian eatery
opens on campus

There is a new restaurant on campus. No, not another meat-eating, grease smoth
ering unnatural food joint. On the contrary, just the opposite.
This time around, Marriott Dining and Food Services is bringing vegetables to
the table. They are fresh, diverse and guaranteed to bring cholesterol down, eneigy
up and leave appetites satisfied.
Veggie Street will be having their grand opening celebration 11 a.m. Tuesday in
the Carolina Mall. The new restaurant features a completely vegetarian or vegan menu.
According to Liz Bohlke, Resident District Manager the restaurant was added
because of the hard work the Food Committee. “The idea came out at food commit
tee meetings from vegetarians; it was a need on campus that we weren’t fulfilling as
well as we could have,” Bohlke said. “It’s great to see students being involved.”
The plan has been in the works because the revenue of Baker Street was declin
ing and there was an interest for a non-meat venue in the vegetarian community.
There are an estimated 300 vegetarians on campus. However, everyone is en
couraged to try the food at Veggie Street. Jhe food that will be served includes pitas,
veggie burgers, saiaa ana iresn vegetables.
Although there will be some unusual foods on the menu students are encouraged
to at least try the new types of foods. The menu will also feature tofu and other goru
ment items. According to Bohlke it is somewhat like an upscale deli.
Students can use their meal plans to dine at Veggie Street. The meal deal will in
clude one entree and two sides. There will be a rotation of vegetables so that each night
there will be different options.
Students are invited to come out and see the new look of what used to be Baker
Street. The walls are painted gold, and the food will be presented so the patrons can
see what they are going to get. The hours will be the same as Baker Street - from 11
a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday to Friday.
There are a few more changes Marriott made over the summer. There is a new
“Grab and Go” program at Sidewalk Cafe. “We are going to be marketing some dif
ferent sandwiches,” Bohlke said.
Since Baker Street is closed there will be consideration for a Pasta Pronto to re
turn where the caesar Salad line is located.
