Former Gamecock shortstop Adam
Everett has been selected for the 2000
United States Olympic Baseball Team,
which was announced today by USA
Baseball in Los Angeles.
Everett joins 17 other Gamecock
athletes and coaches also competing in
Sydney (see list).
Everett, a first team All-American
selection for Carolina in 1998, rejoins
Gamecock Head Baseball Coach Ray
Tanner, who will serve as an auxiliary
coach.
Everett has been playing for the New
Orleans Zephyrs, the Triple A affiliate
of the Houston Astros. Everett likely
would have been called up to join the
Astros had he not been chosen to the
Olympic squad.
“Adam is agreat shortstop, one who
is solid defensively up the middle,”
said Team USA Manager Tommy La
sorda. “He will give our team stability
and will play a very important role on
our Olympic team. He's a fine young
player and I look forward to coaching
him.”
“I am very happy for Adam and very
excited that we will get to share this
Olympic experience together,” Tanner
said. “He is having a great year in Triple
A and he will be a key player for us in
Sydney.”
Everett played for the U.S. Nation
al Team in the summer of 1997 and was
the team’s third leading hitter, batting
.351 in 31 games. Everett was a first
round draft pick, 12th overall, of the
Boston Red Sox in 1998. He was traded
to the Houston Astros
during the last off-season.

their loss with their best effort of the
tour, defeating CB Canarias in their fi
nal game, 98-80, at the Pabellon De
portes Municipal.
Led by Petravicius’ 18 points and
Eidson’s 17 points and 7 assists, USC
blew away Canarias. The Gamecocks
shot an astounding 61 percent from the
field, and all players in uniform scored.
“This was our best game of the trip
today,” Fogler said shortly after the win.
The Gamecocks were slated to play
seven games on the tour instead of
five, but travel complications and ho
tel problems prevented USC from play
ing those extra two games.

Panthers crave exhibition win
Associated Press
FOXBORO, Mass. — The Carolina
Panthers are still looking for their
first exhibition win. And they only
have one more chance to get it.
The Panthers (0-3) and New Eng
land Patriots (2-2) will finish the ex
hibition season Thursday night at
Foxboro Stadium. Although the game
itself doesn’t count for the season,
the Panthers would like to avoid the
embarrassment of a winless pre
season.
“It makes for not a very happy
camp,” coach George Seifert said.
“I can rationalize about all the cir
cumstances, but at the end of each
game you don’t feel very good.”
Making matters worse for Car
olina was the season-ending injury
to wide receiver Patrick Jeffers, who
tore his anterior cruciate ligament
in a game against Pittsburgh. The
Panthers were looking for a free
agent to replace him, but whoever
they sign might not be ready to play
in the exhibition finale.
“I don’t think it really takes a
lot of time to get back into the
rhythm,” said Muhsin Muham
mad, who caught a touchdown pass
from Steve Beuerlein to finish the
first drive they’d played together in
the preseason. “It just takes a little
bit of mental work.”
New England coach Bill Be
lichick said he doesn’t put too much
emphasis on winning in the presea
son either. But he can see how a
team’s confidence would be affect
ed by losing.
“I think what is important is for
the team to come out of the pre
season with a good level of confi
dence (and) to be able to execute
and perform well in the early part
of the season,” he said. “Does that
have to do with winning and losing?
I think to a certain degree it does.
But it depends on the team and the
situation.”
Belichick will use the
preseason finale to decide on a
No. 2 quarterback behind
Drew Bledsoe. But.he also
said that whoever he chooses
for Week one won’t necessari
ly have the job in Week two.
Bledsoe probably will
