Organizations promote change, interaction
by Phil Watson
Journalism Sophomore
Student organizations are a big part of life at Carolina, with more
than 260 organizations registered with the university. Whether you’re
interested in religion, student media, community service, the military,
sports or other special interest organizations, Carolina has a club for
you.
Student organizations are a great way to meet people with simi
lar interests. Some organizations serve primarily as social outlets, some
help students prepare for their careers, some give students an oppor
tunity to give back to the community and some help students grow
stronger in their religious faith.
If you’re interested in greek life, there are 21 fraternities and 15
sororities at USC. Carolina has more than 32 academic honor organi
zations and more than 36 special interest oiganizations.
Joining USC’s Residence Hall Association, one of the largest or
ganizations on campus, is a great way to have a say in how your resi
dence hall is run. Students involved with RHA have regular meetings
to discuss how they can benefit residents.
Journalism freshman Derrec Becker dec' led to be a floor repre
sentative his freshman year. He said the experience helped him on sev
eral levels.
“Volunteering to be the fifth floor representative for Snowden Hall
gave me the opportunity to have a say in what goes on where I live.”
Becker said. “I could hear the complaints and suggestions of my hall
mates and then mention those suggestions at the meetings. It was an
opportunity to be involved with those around me, and it helped me
get to know more people.”
The Association of African-American Students is another
large campus organization. Chemical engineering sophomore
Piere Middleton said he made a lot of new friends and learned
more about black history by joining AAAS.
“AAAS gave me a chance to develop as a student. It made
me well-rounded and allowed me to meet new people,” Mid
dleton said. “I enjoyed the cultural events this organization gave
me a chance to participate in. I was enlightened by AAAS. It
taught me things about African-American culture that 1 didn’t
previously know.”
Criminal justice freshman Negolia Alexander also benefit
ed from a student organization. She said being in the USC chap
ter of the NAACP helped her make new friends and express her
beliefs.
“The NAACP allowed me to participate in the social
scene at USC just as 1 did in high school,” Alexander said. “It
gave me the opportunity to find persons with similar interests
to my own on this large campus.”
Sport organizations also help new students make friends and
have fun.
Business freshman Ryan Hoheman played rugby his freshman
year.
“Rugby was a great way to meet new friends and go on so
cial outings,” Hoheman said. “Also, the Rugby Club allowed me
to see many parts of the southeast by playing away games. The
game is also good for the competitive spirit and friendship.”
