USC Columbia: at the heart of a capital city
~ BY CHARLES PRASHAW
JQ.URNALISM SOPHOMORE
With more than 100,000 residents, Columbia
can seem overwhelming to new students who hail
from smaller towns. As a new student, you’ll prob
ably spend most of your time in the downtown area
aitxind campus. Here’s a look at some of the popu
lar places you’ll want to visit, along with other at
tractions Columbia has to offer.
. BOOKSTORES
There’s plenty to do on and near campus, but
one of the first things you’ll want to do when you
arrive at Carolina is pick up your books.
USC students are served by four main book
stores. Addam’s University Bookstore is located at
Main and Blossom streets across from the Towers.
In a partnership with efolletl.com, Addam’s allows
students to order books online and pick them up at
the bookstore.
ffTlie Russell House Bookstore is located at the
Russell House University Union on campus. A small
fraction of proceeds from book sales at the Russell
House Bookstore goes toward university scholar
ships.
South Carolina Bookstore and Carolina’s Book
store, both on Main Street, are the other two sources
for textbooks near campus.
The best advice for buying books is to shop around
online and in each store to try to find the best val
ues.
FOOD
After getting your books and moving in, you’ll
probably want to get a bite to eat. Russell House of
fers plenty of eateries, including some commercial
restaurants, but chances are you’ll find yourself pin
ing for off-campus fare relatively quickly.
For something that fits the college budget, try
Sandy’s or Stuffy’s on Main Street.
If you’re going out on a date and don’t want to
look like a scrooge, try California Dreaming, also on
Main Street.
If you’re not in the mood to leave your residence
hall, several restaurants will deliver right to your
dorm. Beezer’s, located on Sumter Street across from
the Horseshoe, delivers sandwiches until 4 a.m. on
weekends. Papa John’s Pizza, Wing Zone, Pizza Hut,
Steak Out and Domino’s also deliver to campus. If
it’s too late to get food delivered, take heart - the In
ternational House of Pancakes (on Assembly Street
across front the State House complex) stays open 24
hours a day.
If you like drinking coffee, several choices are
available near campus, including Cool Beans (on
College Street near the Horseshoe) and Immaculate
Consumption (at Main and Pendleton streets).

OTHER AREAS
Another area of interest near campus is the Vista,
located west of campus on Gervais Street. Some of
the restaurants in the Vista might be for the older
crowd, but a few of the places are worth visiting,
