Office celebrates diversity, differences by Carl Johnson DEPARTMENT OF STUDENT LIFE The Office of Multicultural Student Affairs (OM SA) at the University of South Carolina is designed to assist ethnic minority students in their academ ic, social, and cultural development. It serves as a link between the University and the student by spon soring and coordinating a myriad of support services. Staff persons are also available to: * Listen to individual student concerns & work with them on a one-to-one basis * Act as a referral agent * Encourage the pursuit of academic excellence & involvement in co- curricular activities * Serve as an advocate and support network for minority students * Conduct research and make recommendations on the status of minority students enrolled at USC. The OMSA offers students a variety of excit ing organizations to become involved with at USC. The transition to college can be difficult, so the OM SA plans events to help with that first year. The Minority Assistance Peer Program (MAPP) pairs incoming students of color with older students who can show them the ropes. The older students mentor the first year students in many different ar eas. They not only ease the troublesome disease of homesickness but also provide proven study skills and teach new students where to go to receive help writing that first paper or some guidance with this particularly troubling math class. In addition to offering some guidance for that first year, the OMSA also has a host of student or ganizations in which first-year students can become involved. One of the laigest student oiganizations on cam pus is the Association of African American Students (AAAS). The mission of AAAS is to provide pro gramming and leadership for students of color at USC. They plan many different events throughout the year including a step show, programming during Black History Month and the Elite Male Scholar ship Pageant. It is an excellent way for a new stu dent to get involved and feel a part of the campus. Students Associated for Latin America (SALA), is another organization which is very visible on cam pus. These students promote Latin American cul ture throughout the university and Columbia com munity. They plan major events like Hispanic Heritage Month and also have socials where traditional Latino dances are taught. The Office of Multicultural Student Affairs is a place where students can feel at home. The programs are exciting, all we need is you. Stop by the office in the Campus Activities Center, or call 777-5780 for more information.
