Gamecock Sports Men's tennis drops match to Bulldogs Tennis Roundup Gamecock Sports South Carolina took on Georgia, the reigning national champions in Di vision I men’s tennis Wednesday at the Sam Daniel Tennis Center. Carolina looked strong out of the gates, winning the doubles point with help from the No. 3 spot team of Jerome Jourdon and David Nelson who won 8-3. Georgia had won at the No. 1 spot, but Carolina fought through a tiebreak-. er in the No. 2 doubles (Rob Steckley and Guillaume Legat) to win the point, 9-8. In singles, Seth Rose continued his winning streak, making it six in a row for the freshman from Boca Ra ton, Fla. His SEC dual match record in creased to 6-2 on the season while his overall record is now 14-10. ” Senior Juan Gamboa sat out the singles match due to a back injury. Match against Vanderbilt rescheduled. The South Carolina men’s tennis team will take on Vanderbilt on Friday at 1 p.m. The match was originally sched uled for a 2 p.m. start time, but due to possible weather interference the match will start at 1 p.m. In case of rain the match will be moved from the Sam Daniel Tennis Center to the indoor tennis courts at the USC Fieldhouse. Four seniors will be honored for their years of service to the men’s ten nis program and to the USC. Four-year player Olof Akesson, a native of Hiarup, Sweden, is also an outstanding student and was placed on the SEC Academic Honor Roll as a ju nior. Akesson also won the Tennis mag azine/lTA Arthur Ashe Jr. Award for Leadership and Sportsmanship for Re gion II. Jeff Beigman, a senior from Hilton Head, is one of the team’s co-captains for the 1999-2000 season. Jourdon, another one of the team’s captains, is from Courbevoie, France, and will head into a chance at going to the NCAA Tournament for his fourth year. - Gamboa will have his last home match as a member of the Gamecocks. Gamboa has only played for USC for two years. Vanderbilt will be the team’s op ponent as they come to the end of the 2000 season. Getzin replaces assistant coach Scott Sandel who was hired as the head coach at Northern Michigan University in March. Getzin will be responsible for re cruiting, conditioning and technical train ing. “It’s great to be back in Columbia. Kim has done a good job the last few years and we hope to add to that base,” said Getzin, a native of Oak Creek, Wis. “It’s exciting to f be back in the al ways competitive SEC. The future looks bright for Car olina volleyball.” USC officials | are equally excited 1 to invite Getzin GETZIN back to the Game cock program. “We are thrilled to have Joe back with our program. He’s an outstanding trainer and recruiter. He will add a great deal to our program,” said Christo pher, who enters her eighth season at the USC helm in 2000. “He’s very dedicated to the sport of volleyball and the experience he has a head coach, assistant coach and club di rector is invaluable.” Getzin came to Carolina after spend ing one season as the head coach at the University of Portland. While at Portland his team achieved a team GPA of 3.34. Prior to taking the post at Portland, he was the head coach at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Prescott, AZ from 1997-’99. In his second year at Embry-Riddle his team was ranked regionally through out the season in the NAIA. He was the Director of the Yavapai Junior Volleyball Club front 1995 un til 1999. Working as the director, he oversaw more than 100 volleyball players from ages 10 -18. Getzin was an assistant coach at the University of Arizona for the 1988-91 as the Wildcats went to the NCAA Tour nament in both 1989 and 80. Prior to coaching at Arizona, Getzin was the < coach of the Southern Arizona junior team. Beginning his coaching career in 1987, Getzin coached the Chicago Breeze, a team in the women’s Major League Volleyball. Getzin received his bachelor’s de gree in physical education from Geoige Williams College in Downers Grove, IL in 1985. Getzin and his wife, Andrea, have two children: Sara Rose (4) and Erin Eliz abeth (1). Wallace from page 9 it. They believe they are the best team in the nation. After the team swept Auburn in the first SEC series of the year, they convinced themselves that they were that good. And after two consecutive sweeps of Alabama and Mississippi State, the Gamecocks convinced the nation that they were that good. Now finally, af ter disposing of the Tigers in a game that was never really in doubt, they might just have convinced the group of people who really matter most: their fans. The Tigers proved to be mofe then a hump. They were a mogul. Every Carolina fan knew the team could beat Clemson, but in the back of ourminds, no doubt, we all had that fear of “What if they beat us again?,” which is usu ally followed with “Man, I hate Clem son....” But, like a skier who has no fear, Carolina jumped over the big orange mogul that has haunted them for so long. And now, finally, Carolina can go on and keep convincing everyone else that they are for real. ' That is, until next Wednesday, when the two teams meet again. How ever, this time, the war starts here.
