Mamee Groves was fourth,with a mark of 44-3 1/4 and Loren Thouvenot fifth at 42-9. Thouvenot later placed third in the hammer throw, with a mark of 158 10. Groves placed 14th in the event, at 147-2. Candy Mitchell was sixth in the javelin, with a throw of 160-11. On the men’s side, the 4x100m re lay team placed second with a time of 39.57. The “B” team was eighth in the event, at 41.02. The 4x200m relay “A” team placed sixth, with a time of 1:25.30. Directly behind them was the “B” team in sev enth, with a time of 1:25.66. The Gamecocks (13-7, 5-2 SEC) won all six singles matches as dou bles play was cancelled when Caroli na clinched the match. Alabama falls to 6-11, 0-9 SEC. Sophomore Katari na Markovski continued her good play, as the No. 13 player in the nation easily defeated Weyli Chang 6-3,6-2. Lynn-Yin Tan won her fourth straight match with her 6-2, 6-2 straight-set win over Becca Baun. Next up for Carolina is a trip to Mississippi next weekend. The Game cocks take on Mississippi State on April 7 in Starkville. South Carolina men’s tennis com pleted a successful weekend, defeat ing Geoigia Tech on Sunday afternoon at the Sam Daniel Tennis Center, 6-1. Although rain threatened to start all day, the Gamecocks finished their matches with relative ease to clinch the win. In doubles, Carolina took two out of three matches to win the first point towards the final score. The pairs of Jourdon/Steckley and Akesson/Legat each raised their SEC dual match to tal to 3-2 for the spring season. In singles, Guillaume Legat con tinued to lead the Gamecocks when he won at the No. 1 position over Sergio Aguirre from Georgia Tech, 6-0, 6-4. Jerome Jourdon was the first Game cock to finish his match, defeating Roger Anderson of GT, 6-2,6-3. Robert Steckley clinched the match when he overtook Jason Jeong, 6-4,6-4. Things started to get a little close at this point for the Gamecocks, as the last three matches went to three sets. Freshman Seth Rose raised his dual SEC record to 5-2 when he came from be ing down one set to winning 3-6,6-2, 6-3. Olof Akesson also went to three sets. The third set was played as a tie breaker because of impending rain. Juan Gamboa could not hold on to pull out the win over David Wright. The USC men’s team defeated the Arkansas Razorbacks at the Sam Daniel Tennis Center on Friday. South Car olina extended its record to 5-8, while Arkansas drops to 6-10 overall and 2 5 in the SEC. South Carolina had performances throughout the competition, starting with the doubles where USC won all three matches. With the three wins, the doubles teams raised their overall competition records to 6-6 for Jourdon/Steckley, 6-4 for Akesson/ Legat, and 3-2 for Gamboa/ Nelson. In singles competition, No. 64 Legat took over the match against No. 77 Henrik Tofft, winning 6-0, 6-4. At the No. 1 spot, freshman Steckley lost to No. 15 Oskar Johansson. Johansson raised his record to 5-1 in SEC dual matches and 25-11 overall. Gamboa clinched the match for the Gamecocks when he beat Aleksey Bubis 6-2, 7-5 at the No. 4 position.
