The 'royal we' with Rob and Kevin
—
It’s untimely warm for this time of year, but we
are in South Carolina. So our three weeks of true win
ter have come and gone, and we now look upon the
sizzling and miserable summer that is ahead. It’s that
damn groundhog. Why does he always have to ruin
it for us in the end?
On a side note, why do we celebrate Groundhog
Day? Think about it for a second... there, do you not
see how ridiculous it is to set aside an entire day just
to see what a rodent will say about the weather? Now
do you understand why the Canadians laugh at us?
Anyway, where were we? Oh yeah, summer is on
the way. But first, we have spring (or “summer’s com
ing”)! Yes, the season that can’t really make up its
mind will be here shortly if it isn’t already.
So what does this mean for us in the scholastic
sense? It means no class for a week! That’s right, we
pay a heap of money to come to this fine establish
ment of higher learning and then relish when we can
get a break from it. The aspect of self-conscious con
sumerism really doesn’t apply to us college kids.
But to avoid getting sidetracked for the second
time (too late!), we would like to look ahead to the
luxury of spring break. We’ve been in school for two
months straight. We, personally, have not been home
since the end of the Christmas break, so we are look
ing forward to a week in good old Georgetown. You
see, we take the word “break” in spring break as a cue
to relax for a few days, gather your wits and prepare
for the home stretch that is March and April. We won’t
do anything extravagant. Kevin will play with his pup
py, and Rob will play Super Mario Brothers.
ouiue ui yuu win laugn at uiib luea. vjci uui aiiu
do something,” you scream. And perhaps you’re right.
When else in our (rapidly dwindling) young adult fives
will we be able to indulge in the finer things for a week
sandwiched between the brutal reality of responsi
bility and accountability? Not for a long while, we pre
sume. But guess what? This stirs us not at all. Because
while many of you look at this upcoming week as an
opportunity to release whatever frustrations you have,
we simply look at it as a chance to sleep late and
goof off.
You take the word “break” as a cue to break
your bank account and your energy. You’ll hop on
some discount jet to some remote, tropical location
where you will spend time and money in overcrowd
ed hotels, clubs, beaches and bars. You’ll meet strange
new people who are hellbent on one (or two) things.
You’ll forget about these people as you try to extend
your personal drinking record to three days (up a full
day from your previous record).
(Flash to Georgetown) Here we’ll be, stomach
ing the smell of the paper mill, catching up with our
family and taking the occasional drive to Charleston
or Myrtle Beach, just for a change of scenery. We will
spend a lot of “quality time” with the family at home,
having very little ambition to do much of anything.
Wfe’ll have clean laundry, a free place to stay and stom
achs filled with the wonderful food of Mom and Dad.
Wfe’ll come back to Columbia revived, rested and ready
for whatever exams we have ahead.
You 7/return to reality with an empty wallet, an
empty head and nothing but vague memories of
what you think might have been the greatest week
of your life. You’ll get back to town Sunday night,
you’ll try to get some “quality” sleep before your first
class, but you’ll have to do laundry while studying for
your chemistry midterm. You fight physical and men
tal exhaustion as you try to absorb knowledge for the
first time in seven days.
Not to knock your decisions, because we all know
it’s your choice. More power to you, but we obviously
differ in our opinions, here. So we would just ask
that you not fall on us when you try to get to your seat
in class. We understand the sunburn makes moving
around tough, but we’re trying to glance at our notes
one last time.
