Baseball from page B8 “Yesterday was almost a perfect college game,” said USC head coach Ray Tanner. “Today, it got a little sloppy. They kicked it around a little bit, and we kicked it around a bit. But we continue to get stellar outings from our pitching staff.” Scott Barber was credited with the save for USC, his first of the season, and Bo Mobley hit a solo shot in the sixth inning for the Gamecocks, who with the win on Saturday - hold a 33-4 advantage in their all-time series against the Cougars. USC 4, C of C 0 (Friday’s game) Kip Bouknight, the ace of South Carolina’s vaunted pitching staff, was recently named National Pitcher of the Week by Collegiate Baseball. On Friday, he proved why. Bouknight threw a complete game and three-hit shutout in the Gamecocks’ 4-0 win against the College of Charleston, the opener of a three-game series. In its first nine games of the season, USC had aver aged almost 11 runs a game, and when senior Nate Janow icz hit a leadoff home run in the bottom of the first inning, it looked as if the Gamecocks’ high scoring ways would con tinue. But Charleston’s Lucas Hocker had other ideas. The senior left-hander from Arkansas City, Ark., set tled down after giving up another run in the second inning and kept USC from adding to its lead until the eighth in ning. Hocker, who finished the game with seven strikeouts, and Bouknight, who finished with six strikeouts, made Friday’s game a classic pitching duel. “You can’t say enough about Kip,” Tanner said about his pitcher’s performance. “And Lucas Hocken did a nice job for them, he kept us at bay. It was a well-played college baseball game, and fortunately for us, we got a few runs and Kip Bouknight was very, very good.” Chris Plummer broke Hocker’s rhythm in the bottom of the eighth with an RBI single to left that put Carolina up by three, and catcher Brandon Pack’s sacrifice fly in the next at-bat brought home Brennan Dees and put the game out of the Cougars’ reach. Bouknight then finished the game in style, striking out the side in the ninth inning to end the game. The win helped to improve his record to 4-0, with his ERA now a paltry 1.52. “I’ve got to give a great deal of credit to the guys be hind me,” a modest Bouknight said after the game. “Coach Meyers (USC pitching coach Jerry Meyers) called a great game, and Pack caught a great game, so it was a good team effort.” Additional Note: USC first baseman Tripp Kelly ex tended his hitting streak to 10 games with a single in the second inning.
