Dance Marathon

enthusiasm and energy at the highest possible
levels. The dance combines a variety of steps and
music, including the hokeypokey and songs by
Ricky Martin and from the movie “Footloose.”
V Each participant will get six one-hour breaks
during wliich he can sit down.
The breaks allow for a 20-minute food break,
20 minutes of massage time and 20 minutes to make
crafts.
Participants also get unlimited breaks to use
the restroom and can bring toothbrushes, a change
of clothes and other necessities.
“The purpose is to symbolically show that the
students support sick children and that they’ll give
themselves and their money for them,” Stewart
said.
Interested people must raise $150 to partici
pate in the marathon. Students who want to par
ticipate may register at 4:30 p.m. today outside the
Russell House.
They must present the money before the
marathon begins.
The money raised will go to help the more than
62,000 infants, children and adolescents who go to
the children’s hospital each year.
At the marathon, about 20 families will in
teract with participants and tell their stories. Chil
dren up to 16 years of age will dance and play games
there.
Last year, USC’s Dance Marathon broke na
tional records by raising the most money ever for
a first-year event. It gave more than $57,000 to
the children’s hospital.
In order to beat national records for the most
money raised for a second-year event, the Dance
Marathon would have to raise $105,000. Stewart
said the executive committee decided to set a more
realistic goal of $70,000.
“It looks like we’ll have a lot of participa
tion, but not as much as we thought,” Stewart said
“This year, we want to concentrate on uniting
the campus. I think this will be accomplished
easier than the monetary goal.”
She said she expects about 400 students to be
in the ballroom at a time. This includes dancers,
staff and volunteers. Students may go to volunteer
or just to watch.
Electronic journalism sophomore Elise Tyn
dall decided to participate in the event because she
likes the sponsor, the Children’s Miracle Network,
and wants to get involved on campus.
“I’ve worked with children through other pro
grants, and it’s just an amazing feeling to help them,”
Tyndall said.
“I’ve never done Dance Marathon before, but
if staying on nty feet for 28 hours will help save
even one child’s life, then it’s worth it.”
Stewart said dancers leant an important lesson
from staying up for such a long period of time.
“At the end of the 28 hours everyone is real
ly tired, but if you think about it, the kids are equal
ly exhausted front being sick all the time,” she said
“They don’t get to go to sleep, wake up and feel
better in the morning. Dance Marathon gives peo
ple a new perspective.”
Stewart said she realizes that it’s hard for par
ticipants to continue the entire 28 hours, but they’re
strongly encouraged to stay until the closing cer
emony begins around 9:15 p.m.
Tlie amount of money raised will be revealed
at the ceremony. Stewart said this year’s'intake
should be just as surprising as last year’s.
The Dance Marathon came to USC last year
partly because Coordinator of Greek Life Carl
Johnson felt the need for it. When he was a grad
uate student at the University of Tennessee, he par
ticipated in a marathon.
“There seemed to be no big event like this at
USC during the spring,” Johnson said.
“With the number of students on campus and
their eneigy and drive, I just thought it would be
a great program for students to buy into and
come away with this great sense of accomplish
ment.”
